I recently purchased a 53 ft power boat and would like to enable my adult children and spouses to operate it and be insured without me being on board? I've asked my insurance agent about qualifying the family members and she said she'd get back to me - not sure I'll ever get an answer.

So I'll start a log book for documenting their time, but people work so don't expect to have weeks on end of time at the helm for them in a year or so. They have grown up boating, but have not owned boats of this length in the past which seems to be the determining factor. Anyone been down this path before and know how to get them qualified?

Most insurance companies will accept an endorsement from a well qualified professional captain, after having spent some time training/observing. You'd probably want to run the captain's resume past your insurer before going to the expense of hiring and training.

Check your policy. I was surprised when I read that "insured" basically includes me and anyone operating the boat with my permission. This seems to be the case even after they eliminated the licensed captain requirement. Yours may be different and there may be additional terms that limit this so tread carefully, but when I asked my agent I was surprised to learn that I and anyone I allow to operate the boat was covered.
