Sorry to hear about all the problems at MMA, President Gurnon is great person and leader. I am class of 90 and have been in the Yachting industry ever since. First you must take a bite of reality and realize that you will not come out as a Captain. Be ready to start as a deckhand on a big boat or maybe a Mate on a smaller vessel. Unfortunately if you only have the summer, It will be difficult to get on a large crewed vessel as they need someone for the entire season. Periodically Wilson's office gets summer positions or check around your local harbors.
Once you graduate head for Newport and work the crew agencies, brokerages and pound the docks. If that does not work, pack your car and head for Ft. Lauderdale, you should not have much problem finding work. Good american mates are hard to find, I should know, I just spent a week looking for one, and luckily and old crew member became available or I would still be looking.
Good luck, and feel free to e-mail me.

I hopped in a friends car and drove it to Florida with 2 hundred bucks to my name and place to stay. It took all of 2 days to find work on a boat (day charter sail boat) and then about 3 months to land a good job on a 140' Feadship, as 2nd mate, i.e.-deckhand. It then took about 5-6 years till I got a Captains job, and I had allready been a paid captain since I was 19. Like I said you need to be patient and learn the business first, you will be a much better captain if you work your way up, than becoming an instant captain by luck. Remember, the Academy teaches you to drive big ships and nothing about yachting, but you will have good core skills that will benefit you in this industry,

    Robmac,
I hire two deckhands every summer to work the season.I need someone from May 15 to October 20 to work in Maine. We work pretty hard, I can tell you that you will get plenty of underway time, but we are only doing short day trips. The boat is a day boat, and as such you would have to take care of your own living accomodations. Please PM me if you are interested.
