    Gentlemen,
Purchased a 1989 34 Carver Santego this past summer..she has a pair of 7.4 Mercruisers , each with approx 1100 hrs on it. Both engines need a lot of cranking and pumping to get them going, but when they do go they idle and cruise nicely, however, there seems to be a little stream of what looks to be unburnt fuel coming from the port exhaust, and that engine is constantly coughing and farting at higher rpm and is unable to pull past 3700 prm. Starboard side will pull cleanly thru 4400 and sounds sweet. I have changed everything, so new wires, plugs ( the correct heat range),cap, rotor, cleaned the rust out of the distributors, and made sure the chokes pull off and that the spark arrester is spotless, the only thing left is the carb...and the boat drinks fuel, almost double the fuel consumption of my old boat..a 31 Trojan with a pair of 318's..any ideas??
    thanks in advance... Pete.

Tune up 101 ! Do a compression test . That is step #1 when doing a tune up , other wise you are only throwing money and time at it . You must have a base line to start from .

After compression test, check fuel filters and rebuild/change carbs. Quadrajet carbs if that's what you have, have an issue where the bowls will leak into the motor when shut off when they need to be rebuilt.
