Hi ewerybody. We are from Finland and have two boats at the Gulf, at Galvestone and at Corpus Christi. They are sailing boats 38' and 40' with a draft of appr. 6.5'. Our problem is to get them to the East-coast (we'w tryed allready twice, but had to return). Now we are gonna take the ICW from Galv. to appr. New Orleans and then continue on the Gulf. Now the question: "we would NOT llike to get around the key's (time-window). The Occeechobee waterway (to Stuart at the Atlantic) would be our choice, howewer, them bridges at the route. Whats the lowest clearence with them? Our height is appr. 40' -45'. Can we make it? Another choice could be the Marathon, but is there any idea to take that? (allmost the same as to get around.... Hmmm.... pleace reply to my e-mail: kiselin at 2me dot fi

your draft should be OK on the OWW, although you have to be careful and follow the marked route across the lake carefully. We're still in the rainy season but if you are going to do this later in the winter, check the corps of engineer website to make sure tehre is still enough water! http://www.saj.usace.army.mil/Divis...aterResources/WaterMgt/DOCS/Reports/r-nav.txt also there has been some shoaling at the junction with the ICW in St Lucie, last time i came thru, depth were about 6 1/2' at low tide... so you'll have to play the tide, the problem is right before the St Lucie River reaches the ICW.
Gulf toAtlantic If you go into activecaptain.com...sign up..free ..and view chart section..you can check bridge heights on the chart all the way across...
just came from pensacola thru OWW last week to daytona, lake had between 9.5 to 11.5 in depth and if not mistaken bridge clearance was 50 ft plus.Fun trip, good luck
The time you waste at all the locks and the dangerous navigation through the lake is not worth it. Go through Marathon! Smooth sailing. Capt. Cory
I have taken 6' of draft through the lake. However, be fore warned that the west side of Lake Occecchobee is very shallow from Clewiston until where you actually are into the open water of the lake. There is an old bridge just east of the east side of the lake and I forget the height, but that is the limiting spot and if memory serves me right it is less than 50' and somewhere around the mid to low 40's feet. If you have a full keel you can try crossing the lake, but it's easier to cut through the keys at Marathon and the 7 mile bridge. However you'll probably end up anchoring somewhere on the bank before getting to marathon in no man's land with nothing around you, although it's usually calm there.
