Because there will of course be cries of 'just try a little longer'. That's the 'little longer'. Besides, with the assets already out there, there's no reason to give up while there's still light. When we're young we do stupid things like challenging the wrath of nature. Most of us survive with a great story. Some don't. Thoughts and prayers for the family.
That's what suspending the search means to them. Not as direct as "ending" and I guess if there was reason they'd start again. They told the parents on Wednesday that they'd end it today. Yes, there are petitions online to get them to continue but that's not going to happen now. Also, they are eliciting volunteers and private boats and planes. By now the area to search is huge. They've already searched up to Hatteras. But the flow pattern really widens as you go north. So, the likelihood of finding them alive is approaching zero. Likelihood of finding anything is higher but more likely one day some fisherman runs across it.
