I had a friendly argument with a colleague who insists that Feadship has for decades subcontracted out the fabrication of their hulls and decks to other yards and only mate the sections and do the fitouts. I believe this has been done in the recent past but not as he says for decades. He went as far as to saw they (Feadship) have shipped sections from as far away as South Africa. I believe this to be true of other yards but not Feadship, Oceanco for example. Can someone more knowledgeable than I set us straight to the real Facts?

I don't know if either De Vries or Van Lent brought stuff from SA but I do know they have sub contracted out Hull and superstructure work since the early 90's.

De Vries used to Brush Paint the whole topsides too, like the rest they now spray them.

Henk De Vries is a member here so maybe he can chime in with the guaranteed correct info.

Scheepswerf Slob in Papendrecht fabricate the majority of the hulls and superstructures for De Vries and Van Lent and I believe Slob to be a subsidiary of Koninklijke DeVries as well as others such as Akerboom & STI Engineering.

Nothing wrong with brush painting... I can come out as well as spray in finish. Actually I think we will be back to it or a modern version eventually. Lots of places in Holland to make hulls and superstructure and Feadship has used I suspect nearly all. They do have there own subsidiary for hull work now.... SCHEEPSWERF SLOB
Feadship associated company web page http://www.kdvs.nl/De_Vries_Groep/Bedrijven/Slob

Here is Scheepswerf Slobs home page

Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw is right next door to DeVries Makkum for aluminum.... and they have worked for Feadship

However, I think Graaf Ship is the best for steel in Holland... have nice video feature of time lapse on the website
