I've been watching this weather march across the country. Feeling less guilty about my injury keeping us on the dock since it doesn't look like we'd be making the run anyway. We're thinking about putting our trip on hold for a year, and spend this summer cruising the east coast.

Mariners are advised that, in response to updated river stage forecasts by the National Weather Service, the Canal Corporation will begin removing lower gates of movable dams, in the Mohawk River section of the Erie Canal, from Lock E-8 to Lock E-15, this evening.

Vessels on the upper pools of these locks may become grounded as water levels recede well below normal navigation levels in the coming days.

For updates and information monitor 1-800-4CANAL4 and New York State Canals.

How long do those precautionary measures normally take? Will the Eri Canal be closed for longer periods?

Due to the flooding of the Elbe River in Germany, locks and canals in that area will be be closed for weeks, at least for pleasure boats, if not for all traffic.

The peak of that flood is just passing Hamburg. But the dykes and flood barriers are working. We get lucky away. On the second picture you see the fishmarket, which is in front of the barrier. If flooded, they just open all doors and let the water float through it, thats it. The rest is cleaning.

Guess everything depends on what weather follows and whether what's happening causes damage to any of the locks. Hope you're signed up for the alerts.
