    Hi
New member/first post. (Have been lurking for a while).

My favorite boat would be my own...

Since I tend to get really seasick on small boats, I will need a big boat.

As an alternative to a personal luxury submarine from www.ussubs.com,
I was thinking in the lines of a "hybrid" between a SWATH and a Wave-Piercer (Craig Loomes style). Even though the SLICE versions of the SWATH seems to have good economy for fast cruising, I would probably still go for a two-hull.
The "hybrid", constructed with a high wet-deck, will give comfort and safety.
The demi-hulls would be large enough to hold batteries and a huge amount of diesel and water ballast for adjusting for used diesel. Keeping weight low.
Constructed in steel and alu. (Weight low)
Propulsion will be Diesel-Electric. Maybe with "Zebra" batteries as buffer.
Size would depend on design requirements for seaworthiness, something between 100-150 feet. Too wide, I know, for most marinas.
This boat will be designed to easily ride out most bad weather outside the harbors.
It will be build "like a tank", to sustain heavy seas.
This boat should carry me (and a small crew) on circumnavigation.
This "platform boat" (Floating coffee table, if you wish) will have plenty of room for toys.

Alternatively... Any boat where, in the bow, I could mount a humongous bottle of liquid detergent. Spraying this from the bow should break the surface tension of the water, thereby smoothing out my ride.

On a budget... Maybe a more modest size of boat, with a nice little nurse that could drug me out cold, to sleep through periods of restless waters.

Hi and welcome onboard! Here we only get seasick when we have no boats at all... ;)

Your idea of spraying detergent may have the opposite effect, or? When young I was sailing 5o5 sometimes and we had this in a little bottle in the bow, dripping to give less resistance and hopefully we would gain a fraction of a knot in speed.. :D

    Favorite ugly boat

Thank you for the welcome AMG
This is a really interesting place to be, lots to learn, brilliant people.

I was actually hoping that a SWATH-hybrid might have your interest, AMG.
The knowledge and wisdom that is contained in this forum is obviously phenomenal.

I can understand that people might have a hesitation to embark on a ship project that, in the commercial market has produced nothing but really ugly floating boxes/tables (SWATH).

Most attempts on designing a SWATH-Yacht has not been too pretty
The least ugly, perhaps from Abeking & Rasmussen.

How is that for a challenge?

Would be very fitting to show an “Ugly Duckling” here on April 2nd for the 200th birthday of Hans Christian Andersen

Thanks for your confidence, but I´ll have to pass on the Swath hybrid for now.

But I´ll give you an "ugly duckling" that was made as a barge-like houseboat. When Stockholm decided to let people live on their boats along the quays of central Stockholm, they said it has to look like a boat and be able to move without assistance. So I started to draw on this 60-foot tug which could be fitted with a couple of outborders for short trips if necessary. As the majority of my ideas it has never left the computer, until you now were asking for an Ugly Duck to celebrate H.C. Andersen.. :)

Btw, it might be your dreamboat? At least you will not get too seasick along a downtown quay... ;)

    Ugly duck 2

    Thanks again AMG
But I was looking for something that could take me circumnavigating.
Something that would be truly capable of taking on the big bad waves in comfort.

Maybe back to the submarine. That would give another option in coping with pirates, just hoping that they will not be bringing too many grenades.
You could sink their sorry asses by just surfacing from underneath them.
There might be some spectacular views down deeper into the peesoup.

Hope we are not hijacking this thread

    big one is 65m/213feet 1500 ton 80mil$US
    small one is 36m/118feet 380 ton 25mil$US

Maximum interest/bragging rights at the marina!

    Hi guys,

Good topic! Worthy of its own thread. Likewise, I've split the thread so we can keep these subjects on course.

Kruse, welcome aboard! If possible, try to keep images to no larger than 540 pixels wide. Thanks!! :)

    Lars,

Do me a favor... re-size these sub pics. I've got my main frame disassembled while we move the office.

    Thanks!

Kruse, if you have been lurking for a while, you might have seen the Sigma-project to be built at Blohm+Voss in Hamburg. This is the "ugly duckling" that can turn out to be a dreamyacht when finished. I was thinking of your submarine, this will not dive, at least not completely, but using your soap bottle spraying the whole boat will for sure keep the Pirates away... :D

    Surface submarine?

Yes AMG, I had seen it.
I am not a fan of everything Phillipe Starck designs.
Though I believe the choice of builder is smart, since this group of companies has plenty of experience in submarines.

I would still prefer “mine” (the big one further up).
    The Phoenix…
The design started in 97 for a client, but stranded on finance.
To be constructed from 50mm HY80 steel
5000+sq feet of interior space, transatlantic range. Dives to 1000 feet.
    360deg view through acrylic(4”thick) “tube-shaped Deck Salon.
The hull has 6feet dia domed acrylic windows, and same in the Bridge with 8feet front window.
    30+10days submerged life support.
How about an 8feet dia diver lock-out-chamber with deco facility.
Small sub as tender, to dive to 10000feet?
    Anything your heart desires…

I believe that one is hard to beat for bragging rights at the marina.
    :D

Does anyone know whether the Phoenix 1000 has ever been built? The ussubs.com website only shows drawings.
