Derecktor shipyard reports "booming business"

I just read an article in the Connecticut Post about Derecktor. Their new shipyard here in CT is buisy as can be. "A growing list of projects has the company prospering". "The demand for for ferries, military craft and yachts is rising".
Recent projects include a whale watching vessel now in Hawaii, several water taxis in NY, A lobster boat and a pair of 235' high speed ferry boats in Alaska. They are days away from launching a 124' high speed ferry to be based out of Bermuda and a substantial private yacht is undergoing sea trials at this time.
The builder is also currently building a 280' private yacht, a large aluminum catamaran and a fire boat bound for Philidelphia. Derecktor has completed 14 other vessles since opening their new yard in 2001

Certainly is poised to take on the best of Europe and then some, with their custom Mega-yachts.
My personal favorite is the Dereckor 60.

I guess this is about the contract signed just recently on a 85 m yacht with Tim Heywood styling, which might be the largest (in displacement) ever built in the US. Could be a new "Cakewalk" perhaps...?

Now that Larry Ellison is sick of Rising Sun, maybe he's decided to give back to the local economy.

Derecktor Signs Contract for Largest Yacht Built in US in Over 75 years

Here's a photo from a few months ago from the Port Jeff ferry of the Derecktor yard and the 85m under construction. Thats the aft section of the superstructure on the left, with the yacht in the shed. That section was built in NY and shipped over to this yard. Should be one heck of a yacht when completed.

Good for Direcktor!

I have been driving by on I-95 for years and several times a year go kayaking near the yard. There is a huge aluminum sailboat hull sitting in the yard. I think that it was started for an exec from Tyco and then he ended up in jail.
Does anybody know what will happen to it? I hope that the yard got progress payments. Cutting it up for scrap would be wrong.

I too have see that sailboat and it is a piece of art. I think the interior is also like 80 percent complete. The built was for sale for a while I am not sure about it right now. I also saw some of the super structure of the big boat out one day pretty cool.

Also I thought Direcktors was supposed to release the drawing for the big boat at Monaco this year

That sailboat was intended for the head cheese at Tyco, who now is a guest of the feds. The hull sits there, waiting for a buyer as it is for sale. Below is another photo from the ferry, where you can see the hull and the bulbous keel is to the right in its own cradle.
The new Derecktor 85, named Cakewalk, was unveiled in Monaco. Not sure if plans were distributed, but the yard will have a press release out soon with the some of the specs, and it is impressive. And why wouldn't it be, as it will be the largest yacht built in the US in 75 years. I just did a story on Derecktor for one of my publications and did an on-site visit. They did ask that I not take any photos while on site, which I obliged.

Was on it not too long ago, there is no interior, just a few frames and structural elements. It is an aluminium cavern.

Yes,
But a lot of the interior has been constructed and I guess is in storage somewhere awaiting someone to come along and finish the project. I have seen the interior in the joiner shop in Mamaroneck, it is beautiful.

There is a story about Derectors' Cakewalk project on another site that I cannot mention here.
It shows renderings, drawings and a photo of a scale model. Quite impressive!
Google "Derecktor Cakewalk" and you should be able to find it.

Any US shipyard that had 4 builds underway which were of the size and caliber of Derecktor, yes, I'd consider that "booming".

Business is well. Good for them! It's nice to see in the current fabric of America.

Looking forward to seeing more from them and following / reading about their releases.

So....they were building one of the largest sailing catamarans too right? Project Gemini if if remember right that was renamed "Hemisphere"? So, what ever happened with that, was it completed and delivered? I have not seen or heard anything about that project...It's been all over the charter sites yet you can't hear anything about it. I suppose if it was completed you would have heard or seen about it by now?
