Three weeks after hurricane Andrew, I had to fly into Eleuthera, think it was Spanish Wells by way of Nassau. Long cab ride to the bottom, then into a flat marina I thought was Davis Harbor in South Eleuthera. Andrew pretty much leveled everything except right behind a large pile of dredge material, was the 44 Striker I was to rescue and return to PBG. Despite this area was near ground zero from Andrew, the ole Striker was intact.
We left out of this box marina, out a long dredged fairway for near a half mile. Next night anchored in Royal Island, another bomb site (depressing).

I remember the water was beautiful and air clear. I have never been able to get back there after all these years. Has the marina ever turned into anything? I hope I remember the name correctly? Should I continue to dream of getting back down there?

Royal island looked like it had old abandoned buildings on it then, anything come of Royal?

Not much has changed with Davis Harbor since then. It is still a quiet place with nothing going on. The rates are reasonable and it is usually a spot where there are a few sportfisher boats. The fishing there is awesome. It's also a short hop from there to Staniel Cay or Cat Island. There is Cape Eleuthera marina just a little further down the way with some condo type villas and a restaurant that may or may not be open according to when you go. The Cape Eleuthera marina is cool in that it has a little canal off to the side that has some really cool aquatic life in it. Royal Island is one of those places of broken dreams. A few years back a development company came in with grand plans of zillion dollar homes a Jack Niclaus golf course etc. It was going along with some construction and then died when the bottom fell out of the housing market. Last I heard was that the owners/developers were fighting amongst themselves and the island is up for sale. The water is still as gin clear as it gets, and it is a place where you can get away from everything.

Royal Island is one of my favorite stops in the Bahamas. It was better back before they tried to develop it. What with all the old buildings on it and their history.

It's still a great anchorage. But now you just get to look at another failed, generic development. Started by another group on men with deeper dreams than their pockets.

Sad to see all the mangroves they removed gone. If the government cared at all for it's natural heritage they would never let that happen and force any one who caused destruction like that to reseed and replace it. That whole anchorage is/was a giant nursery.

Well then, Royal may look like it did after the storm.
But my dreams of returning down there are still active and updated.
    Thanks kids,

Actually it probably looked better when you were there after Andrew Rcrapps. I was on Eleuthera a couple of days after it gave the island a whoopin. It was pretty devastating. However what they have done to Royal now makes that devastation pale in comparison. Capt Bill was right it was really cool going there and walking through the ruins of the old resort and hanging out solo. Now it just looks like a cookie cutter development. Soon enough though the money will run out and it will fall into disrepair. It will eventually be reclaimed by the environment. It will take years for those mangroves to grow back and look like it was. May never see it in my lifetime, but it will happen. However the water and the diving there is world class. The surf is pretty good too right there around the corner off of egg island. Probably some of the best surf I have seen in the islands on the right swell direction and wind direction.
