Yachties beware. There is a crew agency in Fort Lauderdale who sells their database "to anyone who pays for it." I have been spammed several times and when queried, the spammers have indicated this particular crew agency. The agency goes by the initials C.M. Make sure that when you fill out a crew agency app and provide things like passport numbers, copies of license/STCW, work history, emergency contact et al, that you ask the agency specifically who gets to view your data. I have done an extensive investigation of just this subject and the majority of the agencies I interviewed only allow in-house access to crew information and contact same BEFORE submitting information to a prospective yacht owner. In today's era of stolen identification, it would be easy for someone to create a false identity with the information contained in a crew agency data base.
I had a similar experiance a couple of years ago a crew agency wanted e-mail address's to check references, which then ended up in the hands of an unscruppless yacht broker who bombarded them with yacht brochures. I will not ever do that again.
