I need a windlass that can handle a combination rope/chain rode as I often set a hook in as much as 400' of water to halibut fish. The boat I just bought has an older Ideal windlass that cannt be converted to rope/chain. I'm considering a Maxwell RC 12-10 or RC 12-12. Anyone have experience with these? Do they pull the rope as well as they claim? I'll be using a 65# CQR and about 50' of chain, the rest rope. The boat is a 54' Sport Fisher 51,000#'s dry, closer to 70,000#'s loaded. Thanks.

The RC 1200 looks good. I use an all chain Maxwell 2500 with a 30KG anchor so a 2500 lb pull should be OK. Emerald Harbor Marine in Seattle is a Maxwell installer and rep. Look them up on the Maxwell website. They'd know your answers regarding install etc. One thought, for anchoring in the PNW without an all chain rode I'd go closer to an anchor weight of 100 lbs for your vessel.

I went with a Maxwell RC12-10 and it is great. I've used it about a dozen times now in water as deep as 300'+. It pulls great and the rope never slips on the wheel. It is also fast which is a plus for the. Amount of rode I need to recover.
