Possibly just a hypothetical situation, but Mr & Mrs Lotto Winner won a few million dollars recently. Unbeknown to Mr Lotto Winner, Mrs Lotto Winner decided to charter a 85m megayacht for a 10 day vacation in the western Mediterranean during July 2011 as a surprise and celebration. The total cost of this charter was about Euro 1,105,000 - US$ 1,569,100 (plus crew gratuities), or about 2/5ths of their surprise windfall...

I'm informed that this particular megayacht was originally built in Greece in 2004 and benefitted from important EU subsidies of Euro 3 million approx. towards the total new-building cost of some Euro 45 millions. The original owner has since sold the vessel at an undisclosed price to the current owner resident in the Arabian Gulf (rumours have it that the current owner paid in the region of US$ 95-100 million to acquire the vessel).

Mr Lotto Winner believes that Mrs Lotto Winner misguidedly spent an important part of their winnings on a holiday which did not represent any real value for money. He states that Mrs Lotto Winner was confused by foreign currencies, somehow believing that the Euro quoted was the same as the French Franc (ie. a fraction of the current exchange rate) as in 2000, the last time the couple visited Europe. Mr Lotto Winner accuses the yacht broker of supplying misleading information and failing to ensure that Mrs Lotto Winner was suitably advised. Plus, during the actual charter, for 12 guests on a megayacht that could carry 36 passengers, 1 of the 3 main tenders was unavailable 100% of the time, and the 2nd main tender was unavailable for at least 4-5 days due to mechanical problems.

Mr Lotto Winner believes that the yacht / charter broker involved owes him an adequate explanation.

PS. How many yacht / charter brokers were "licking their lips" when it was announced that Colin and Chris Weir, from Largs in Ayrshire had scooped the EuroMillions jackpot of £161 millions? Anyone here willing to admit that they tried selling them a yacht, or at least charter one?

What is a reasonable charter rate?

I recall that about 10-15 years ago, someone managed a charter of a 55m Benetti motor yacht (GALU), I believe, for a 2-year long global circumnavigation. The GALU had to undergo a special refit period to prepare for this adventure, all of which was adequately managed. So far as I'm aware, it was a complete success. Not sure what it cost in total though.

Whatever, if you're paying approx. 2.5% of the total capital investment in the yacht to charter it for a mere 10 days rental, then that would be the equivalent to a return on investment for the owner of 100% after merely 400 days of charter or thereabouts?!

I'm sure I must have got my sums wrong somewhere.

I love the part where a Greek built yacht sells for double its original price 7 years later.

I think you must have got those figures from a broker trying to sell you a yacht.

IMO if i won that money i would never go public stop the beggers from hounding you .. and any broker that forces a sale .. by hounding them don't deserve to be in the game ..

And i fail to see why there name and winnings should come under discussion anyhow .. unless your blatently jealous yourself

Much was written about that couple going to their local "fish & chip" shop in Largs 2 or 3 times a week so where does Dundee come into it. If they have moved from Largs to Dundee they are in definate need of help.

So why bother writing rubbish if you have no interest in them, their winnings or obviously checking up on any facts. The story I read was that they thought by revealing who they are they would not have to tell lies to family members or friends.

Personally I would not have told a sole except for all of my family, all my friends and all my sworn enemies plus all those I do business with.

First, Lotto winners are public domain, and the press covers most large payouts. So there is no keeping it quiet.
Second, most large lotto winners are bankrupt within 5 years. This gal may make it in two.
Third, the only lottery winner I ever saw do it right was Curtis something, the first $5M winner of the NYS Lotto. He showed up to collect his prize with a hooker on each elbow. When asked what he was going to do with his winning he replied "Get a divorce".:D
