That is a neat link. I wonder if the yachties realize that they are on TV. some of them should get curtains....... a little creepy.

In 1989 the Skydome was built in Toronto, a state of the art ballpark for the Blue Jays. It had a hotel attached with many rooms overlooking the field. The height of luxury to be able to sit in your hotel room and watch the game. They were televising one of the first games nationwide in the US and did the typical pan of the park, but especially showing the unique hotel view. Well, if you can see out, you can see in. And a couple was naked and engaged in sexual activities. There is now a sign in the lobby warning that rooms can be seen from the park and that guests need to be sure to draw their drapes.

I wondered the same about the Charleston marina but it certainly isn't the only marina on web cam today. But then anything that can be seen on cam could be seen by someone on another boat or walking by. Basically if you dock at a marina you should know there is no privacy and one must keep their blinds closed if they don't want to be seen.

You're right of course but you know people on the pier can see in, a camera is still too voyeuristic to me.
My little wife and I were walking the docks at a marina many years ago we passed a motor yacht with the salon lights brightly shining.
The hand rails and deck were sorta at eye level and we saw a hairy back pop up, disappear down, pop up , etc etc !
As you you say, people should know they are in a fish bowl on a boat.
I mean, if her back was that hairy, imagine what HE looked like ! eek.

I know several boat owners who leave their boats in CCM before doing the next leg south. Everyone wants dockage near the camera so they can check on their boats by camera from home. One owner was having early morning coffee in his NY office logged onto the camera. All of a sudden his boat lurches as she was hit by a departing boat trying to do a 360 in the fairway with lots of current.
Good way to check up on work progress too.

The zoom feature bothers me, I think. When I went to the site to check it out, someone had zoomed in on a departing sailboat and just stayed there. It was creepy to me, unless the voyeur knew the departing crew?

There are similar cams being added everywhere. This isn't just a water issue. I share your privacy concerns but the fact is that in public venues there really is no privacy anymore. Sometimes even other places. Look at all the nude photos of celebrities being published. Shots sunbathing taken from helicopters. Now here come drones.

The old caution use to be not to do anything you'd be ashamed of your mother seeing. Now it's the whole world and they very possibly can see it. Before sports were all televised people would sneak to a game.

Google Earth in some ways opened things up and was just the start. Add to that the fact now everyone has a camera with them all the time, wherever they go, in their phone.

Like many things the Charleston cam serves a really good purpose and has the potential for abuse. Honestly the cams I can see concern me a lot less than those I don't know are there. Whether the proliferation of cams is right or wrong really isn't the issue today. It is to be aware that anything you do might be seen. Go topless on South Beach it might get published. Nude on Haulover might. Skinny dipping in your pool at home might. And taking your Mistress to your boat in Charleston is highly likely to be seen. Any presumptions of privacy anywhere may be quite ill advised.

But then how many people have lost jobs or opportunities because of photos or comments posted by their friends on facebook? That may be scarier, that even at a private event you can't trust friends not to be stupid. Some college admissions departments and business human resources departments are insisting on reviewing your facebook account. And you might control what you post. But what about the posts by others you're tagged in?

I wish my FL marina had a webcam with controls. Can the electronics, canvas, Volvo, detail and diver people all be on board the same day? **** boat is only 45 feet!

Have you considered installing a private system? They are fairly inexpensive and can be viewed on your phone

The systems are quite reasonably priced and great in easing one's mind. The expense is internet air time but that doesn't become an issue at most marinas.

A private on board camera/security system would be effective if I did not trust people working on the boat which I do.
What concerns is being away from the boat for 6 weeks and a well meaning detail person does not secure my spring lines as they found them. Then I have a 50amp spring line.
When my sailboat was in Charleston I was back home and 50-60 knot squal came through. I got on the camera and sure enough my sail cover needed help. Good info.
