    Anybody old enough out there to run these CAT engines? Appreciate any info you have.

    They are simple enough a teenager can run them.

    Did you buy an old dozer, a generator, or a shrimp boat? There are enough around that you can still get parts engines and running takeouts.

    Wooooooooho :))

    Had one that had an after cooler failure filling No 2 with water, blew the head gasket out the side and carried on albeit a bit untidy

    Tough old girls.

    Had lots of them as gensets running between 399 Cat prime movers. Simple solid little engines, what do you need to know?

    Looking at a Benetti with a pair of these old girls and am basically looking for what you guys have said. A review of the records and a solid engine survey will tell the story. They're definitely don't sip the diesel like the newer models.

    That is true, electronic controls have seriously increased fuel economy on modern engines, the side benefit to that is also a major reduction in soot on the boat. Both of these issues can be addressed to an extent by getting the prop pitch just right. Typically a smoking/fuel hog will have too much prop pitch which will keep the rack pulled further open than optimal.
