Trying to decide when to remove the aftercoolers on the C12 CATs for cleaning/pressure testing and or possible replacement of the core as recommended by CAT to at 6 years. The engines have ~1,200 hrs.

I have seen discussion on boatdiesel.com as well and wanted to reach out on this form for any feedback and or recommendations.

There is logic to ponder here; Cat builds air coolers that do not last.

You have an expensive engine behind that air cooler. Boat engines usually loose poker hands.
Don't screw around with shitzy Cat air coolers, swap them out.

Does Caterpillar have an improved aftercooler core for the C12's?

No, the avatar is not my Cabo, however it is a 40' Cabo Convertible. I really like the photo.

I've noticed some aftermarket aftercoolers on the internet that are about 1/2 the cost of Cat parts. Normally it would be a no brainer and just go with Cat, but their aftercoolers have a less than steller reputation. I'm also sure they outsource them and think that is how they got into trouble in the first place. Anyone have experience with the aftermarket aftercoolers and any good brands out there?

That aftercooler sits above the valve intakes. If it leaks guess where the water is going. A faulty design. The 3406 has the ac siting lower and on the side of engine.
