I am looking at a pair of CAT 3412 C model engines and on the spec sheet it says the application identification is 304 MP "E". Can anyone explain what it means? Is it the same as the "E" rating of CAT?

    Thanks a lot!!!!

Let me take a stab at this, although K1W1 is our resident Cat expert.
According to 'the book', the 'C' in 3412C denotes a mechanical engine as opposed to the 3412E, which is the electronic version with commensurately higher horsepower--1400bhp vs. 1001 at the high performance E rating.

Confused? The ratings--A through E--refer to 'Unrestricted Continuous' to 'High Performance', i.e., duty cycle and load factor variables.

Interestingly, the 3412C and 3412E are 27 liter displacement motors, while the 3412D displaces 32.1 l.

As far as "304mp"...Cat mentions mhp (metric horsepower) but that's a low number for a 3412C which ranges from 510 to 1015 mhp, depending on the rating.

    YMMV.

    Thanks a lot Loren.

The 3412C and the 3412E difference is pretty clear now. Thanks for that.

I have no problems with the duty cycles of CAT (C, E, D, etc.) and the load factors. That's ok.

the "304" is still a bit of a mystery??

One other thing. Does the 3412C have an mechanical Governor or Electronic?

If you'd like, I have a friend at the local Cat distributor--Pantropic Power--in Miami who could answer this question concisely, but I'm assuming the 'C' is mechanical. Drop me an e-mail for a name & e-mail/phone number.

    Or, try K1W1 at his.

    Hi,

Thanks for the praise Loren, I would not say I am an expert I have just been lucky enough to have a lot to do with certain items of the product line over many years.

From memory the 3412C has a mechanical governor. I am trying to find out myself what the 304 MP E bit actually means.(I have asked someone else).

Sometimes the numbers and other odd bits of a model designation can be very confusing not only with the yellow engines either.

    Hi,

It seems that my memory is only half right, these engines come with either mech or electronic governors.

Golden Fox can you please send me by PM one of the Serial Numbers of the Engines you are looking at and I will get the as built data from a contact I have at Caterpillar.

I still didn't get any answer to the 304MP E Question as yet.
