I am in the early stages of developing a fractional yacht program. I am proposing to sell 1/6th shares in a 40m motor yacht. The members of the syndicate will all have sole use of the ship for 6 weeks a year in 2 week slots.

For this to work I intend to have a fixed cruise schedule which will be determined 1-2 years in advance.

    1. Would the yachts need a home moorings or could we just pre book moorings to a fixed itinerary….how does this work, does a Captain take care of Scheduling Moorings a ports of Call.
    2. Are Captains normally appointed directly or through agents. Salaried or Contract? What about the rest of the crew. My vision is for each yacht to have a dedicated crew handpicked for levels of service etc.
    3. For a 40m Yacht how many crew would be normal on a luxury vessel?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I hope this makes sense, I think this is the clearest way to answer each of your questions.

This depends completely where you plan on cruising, you might just need to have a temporary base in a few locations if you have more than one of your fractional owners who want to cruise the same areas.

This varies like the weather. Agents are often used as are Brokers for an introduction of Captains to Clients. Whatever you do I strongly advise you to check every applicants Qualifications and References yourself, don't rely on the Crew Agency/Broker 100% for this.

Good Idea, many clients like to see the same faces again, good terms and conditions help crew to become dedicated.

If it's a heavy charter operation then you will probably be best with 5-6 crew. How many Guests will this boat be setup to cater for? Do you have any experience in Marine matters or have someone in your team that does?

Kiwi 1 has offered you some very good advice, but this bit is probably the most valuable. Based on the questions that you've been asking, I can guess that the answer is likely "no".
I would recommend that you hire either a consultant and/or a good captain to guide you through this process. A knowledgable professional will be able to help you find a vessel that will specifically suite your needs and assist you in implementing a team and a system that will work well for you.
    Good Luck.

    Thanks for your replies

You guessed I am not at all experienced in nautical matters. I am actualy an architect and project manager.

At this stage I am just exploring the concept of fractional yacht programmes as a viable business model.

Alot of people have extremely strong views about the concept of fractional yachting however I am determined to get to the bottom of this. It makes so much sense to share such a large asset as a yacht.

Of the few fractional programes that exist I am most interested in that offered by yachtplus.com however I think that there is probably a market for a custom yacht/cat in the 25m range that would be affordable to a much larger number of people.

Once I have designed a plan that could work I intend to appoint a designer and captain to assist me in developing a viable product.

So excuse the basic nature of my questions, maybee someone could recommend me a book on basic nautical yachting matters!

    Thanks
    Jon

    Hi,

Do you intend to build a new boat to suit your exact requirements or are you looking to try and get a suitable used one?

    Type of Yacht

Custom Cutting Edge Design, And I am looking for an excellent designer. Many of the yachts I have seen have pretty dated looking interiors I am looking for something much more modern. Externaly I would like to push the boundaries and create a real icon.

My current thinking is 3 models 25, 35 and 45m The smallest possibly a cat.

If you want a design icon, why don´t you buy the Wally 118?

I think there is a second one halfway built where you can have a more economical propulsion as well.

I love it but expect many would not. looks a bit like a warship vey much a macho toy thing! Like the Idea of several decks and lots of space over and above speed.
