    As I have commented on before, these accidents happen before law enforcement or the media gets close.

    This is a constant problem in the Lake St. Clair/Detroit river/Erie area as recreational fisherman clog the channels floating in the way of commercial and other recreational boaters and they think they own the channels and can impede other vessels because they have a fishing line in the water and they are unfamiliar to navigational and collision rules. The amount of times I've come up on plane to a fishing boat with no lights on in the middle of a shipping channel at night happens at least 5 times a season or the amount of middle fingers I get because they don't like my wake as the bob up and down in a busy shipping channel. I heard this was a case of the fisherman didn't like the wake of a 40ft boat and had been drinking. The coast guard has issued a warning last year about fishing boats in collision paths with ships.

    These guys absolutely drive me crazy.
    They know zero about any rules at all.
    To them a boat is nothing but a vehicle to get to the fish.

    It s not too bad in So Fl, except a few idiots fishing on the bay with no lights. Hull speed and radar is a must here at night.

    Worst I ve seen was in the ICW in North Carolina, near Shalotte inlet I think as well as in Florida north of Vero. Dozens of small boats in the channel barely leaving room to weave thru. Some of them have to push of your hull so can squeeze thru

    There are some bends in the StJohns river like the Trout River cut-off in Jax.
    The locals anchor on the edge and closer to the channels deep turn. You can watch the boats strain their anchor lines as they are drawn to the passing freighters.
    The local sheriff's files the reports for the missing or lost SFBs.

    Darwin did predict these attitudes in humans.

    There's a channel in Lake Erie between Put in Bay and Sandusky Ohio, where the tin boats get so heavy you literally have to weave your way through. It's a proper shipping channel. I got so P Od at them that I refused to drop off plane. I'd pick a line and run it. I got quite a few middle finger solutes. Quite frankly I didn't give a d**n

    LOLOLOL, I've gotten to this point in some places also. If my wake isn't going to capsize them, and they're in the middle of a shipping or relatively narrow inlet channel, just keep running.

    Tempting but it takes very little to swamp one of them... just a couple of these idiots moving to the wrong side for instance. Not worth the risks. In the end you will always be the bad guy in the big luxury yacht that hurt the little guy.

    I was making fun of “journalists”, somehow whenever you read an article about a boating incident, even a little 30’ express becomes a Luxury Yacht. But don’t get me started on ambulance chasers who are the reason we pay so much money for everything from boats to medical services

    Never swamped a boat. But did swamp a person over a decade ago. I was running up the ICW somewhere, where it's narrow but a fast speed zone up in NC. It was a 35' Carolina classic I was taking to Falmouth, Mass from Pensacola, FL. We were running along at 27' knot cruise throwing a 2'+ wake, and there was a guy in waders, fishing, standing at the edge of the channel just past the red ICW channel marker, but the steel I beam blocked us from seeing him until we were almost parallel to him, saw him motion to slow down, but was way to late and 3 seconds later that went to the bird hand signal. He did get thoroughly soaked.
