Well I can't remember the exact wording in the rules of the road but as I recall, any vessel shall take action to avoid collision. I'm not knocking the USCG as a whole (god knows how comforting it is simply to have them on the other end of the radio when things are going bad) but this is rediculous. They could have easily avoided this.

Won't load for me either... As for his regatta pics, he really should have a NSFW tag there. (Not that I'm complaining... I'm home now, but at the office that could have been trouble.)

You're right Kevin. The image doesn't load anyhow. Dave... maybe you can describe the visual on the Coast Guard mishap. In the meantime, I'd prefer not to have a link on YF to sites that contain images like this. Call me square, boring or accuse me of censorship... but this isn't the place for this.

You can bust on me at the Air Show. OK? ;)

    No problem, I understand.
The video was taken from on board what I believe to be a USCG 31 footer.
As they are on the way to a rescue on Lake Michigan, you can see a big party boat off the stbd bow. Into view comes a (roughly 18-20' outboard) runabout moving at a good clip with two people on board. In the last few seconds, you can see the two guys in the small boat looking and waiving to the party boat just as he collides with the coastie boat. The camera shakes all around & then points to the stern where you can see the two guys swimming away from the overturned (& sinking) runabout. They pull the two uninjured guys aboard.

Carl, feel free to delete this whole post. I understand the situation. I tried to delete but I can't

Wow! I just realized that you guys were not getting the link that I posted. There wasn't anything else but a video that took about 30 seconds to load & it was only the boat video.
    Did I miss something good:rolleyes:
Carl, I plan on having the Bertram, 13' Whaler and 9' RIB at the regatta this fall. Should you be included in the guest;) list? Ruh roh rastro:eek:

    Hiya Dave!

No need to delete. The thread actually touches on a subject that is important and I hope it will encourage others to speak up. While we're all thankful the Coast Guard is present in times of distress, some people have noted the extent in which they are exercising their powers.

Recently, I was idling by the Sand's Harbor Marina when a group of coasties on a RIB blew through the marina at high speed. Not a big deal. Their wake is small at high speed. But, they turned around and came back toward the marina a couple of minutes later and pulled a high speed, 180 degree sweeping turn with multiple small vessels all around them. As they headed north again, they blew right between me and the vessel idling next to me. There was not much more than 30 feet between us and my passengers ended up getting soaked!

There was atleast 100' of water to my starboard side and well over 100' of water to the port side of the vessel idling next to me. There was no need for these C.G. Wannabe-Warriors to "thread the needle" like this. Later that day, I spoke with a Florida Marine Patrol officer who informed this was NOT the first time he had heard this.

In the years following 911, I too embrace heightened security, but I don't support these exercises in testosterone or the blatant endangerment of civilian boaters by coasties enthralled with their powers.

Now that you've described the video in question... I remember seeing it, some time last year I guess. If it is indeed the one I'm thinking... there were substantial levels of "d'uh!!" on both boats.

You bet! BUT... this year, I'm bringing a dart gun to deflate the idiots on RIBS using water cannons to soak the interiors of yachts or dashboards.
