I'm trying to find pictures that explain the results of an oil blotter spot test but haven't been lucky. Does anybody have pictures or a link to a site with pics that explain the results?
Or can anyone recommend a certain testing kit that is a bit more comprehensive than "good" and "need to change".

    Many thanks!

    Hi,

The blotter spot test is a very basic and rudimentary look at the life blood of your engine.

You say you are a Surveyor- If a Surveyor turned up on a job I was on and started to perform a test like that I would have to seriously doubt he was what he claimed to be.

Do you carry Insurance for your Survey business?

If so, I sure hope it covers you should you tell a client " I looked at you Oil in daylight and it looked great" after he has told you that 4 hours after taking delivery of the boat the main engine spun a shell.

There are many labs even in SE Asia where you can get an Oil analysed, this will be of limited use as a one time check but is always much better when done regularly so any problem will be seen to be developing and some corrective action can hopefully be taken before terminal damage occurs.

If you can't get any tested and your not sure just change it saving some for testing .

Oil and Filters are cheap insurance plus a fresh charge will take a while to be affected so you should be able to arrange a test before this happens.

I agree with Kiwi, have oil samples done. CAT dealers will usually have a test facility they can send them to in each area. If you're unsure, just start fresh and change it......
