Another Mega-Yacht contract awarded to Blohm + Voss

    Hamburg, December 10th, 2004

Following the signing of a contract for a large Mega Yacht beginning of November 2004, Blohm + Voss have announced today the signing of another contract for the construction of a large Mega Yacht. The Mega Yacht, going by the Blohm + Voss project name SIGMA, has been assigned the construction number978 970 and will also be delivered in 2007.

The spectacular Phillipe Starck (France) design for this 118 m yacht will be constructed under the supervision of “Blue Ocean Yacht Management“ under the lead of Neil Wade. At present, the same company supervises the refit of the 114 m MY “Pelorus“ at Blohm + Voss for a different owner (Blohm + Voss press release dated September 29th, 2004).

The signing of this contract is the result of an intensified strategic orientation towards the construction of Mega Yachts and underlines the competency of Blohm + Voss. These two yacht contracts will guarantee a good utilisation rate in the fields of construction and manufacturing of Blohm + Voss for the next two years. The future industrial corporate structure of the merger of the companies ThyssenKrupp Werften and Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft (HDW) that was announced as early as in October 2004 will ensure that the staff of HDW will also be involved in the contract works.

She looks really good though. Sigma is a very daring design and I am glad people are willing to step out of the box in design. I was actually a bit concerned about the inverted bow but now that I have seen the pictures, the inverted bow looks great on her. For me the superstructure with the funnels is a bit ticklish. However, I will wait untill she is finished.

If nothing else she is quite intriguing. I haven't quite decided on my personal feelings about the design other than it is refreshing to see someone push the design envelope a bit. That being said, I have a feeling that when the current owner gets bored, she will remain on the resale market for quite some time.

I wonder if we'll ever get accurate information about how it actually handles at sea.....

I know what you mean, as an example Merrill Stephens Yachts has stolen my photo and has been using it for their commercial promotion for a long time now.

    Thanks Brunick.
The photo of the aft section with the men standing in the hatch really gives a sense of just how large this vessel really is.
Did you get a chance to see what the stern looks like?

no - the photos you've maybe seen somewhere where taken from a private multi storey building next to the yard - but i'm awaiting the yacht in the next 4 weeks at the kiel channel in brunsbüttel/rendsburg

WOW! Great job Jannick! I hate to contemplate what the yacht cost, but I'm really impressed with this design.

I have read that Martin Francis provided the naval architecture for this project.

With that in mind, there looks to be a tank-test model just about visible hanging up behind a rafter in the photo of their studio on the francisdesign website.
