There is a Ray Jefferson battery guard on my 38' 1969 Roamer that is connected to all three batteries. I have been having a problem with the starboard battery running low after drifting for a few hours. Should I consider an upgrade? John
Hi, You should get your batteries tested to see if you have any faulty cells- If you have good old lead acid ones this is a relatively simple and accurate way to gauge the actual battery condition. The sailing community seem to have some views on your Battery Guard device: http://www.sailnet.com/forums/gear-maintenance/33232-ray-jefferson-battery-guard.html
Dumb chargers are for use when you are on board to monitor the charge. Otherwise they'll cook your batteries. Dump it for a smart charger. If the batteries are more than a couple of years old swap them out also. There should be good sales next weekend. BTW, are your bilge pumps connected to the bad battery?
