There's a new gallery up on wired.com featuring some of horological highlights from Baselworld 2009, the preeminent watchmaker's trade show. Since time-keeping has been an integral part of navigating the oceans of this planet for centuries I figured it makes perfect sense to share a few of the images here. Concord Quantum Gravity: a tourbillion that rotates vertically and horizontally, a power reserve that uses the expansion and contraction of liquid to indicate levels, and a suspension bridge linking all of it together. (Yes, that framework of wires you see in a suspension bridge inside the watch!)
Porsche Design P´6920 Rattrapante: A chronograph that includes two second hands to measure intermediate split times. At $24,500 it's about half a Boxster or Cayman.
Breitling Navitimer 125th Anniversaire: This limited-edition model celebrates the watchmaker's 125th year of operation. There will be 2,009 made in steel for $6,450, while the 125 red-gold versions will cost $29,340.
Hamilton ODC: Inspired by a prop watch the company created for Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", this rates high on the list of ultimate geek watches. Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?
Nautica NMX 400: A relative steal at $755 the NMX allows the wearer to keep track of 5 different time zones simultaneously. Personally, I would have named it the Nautica OCD.
TX Pilot: TX (Timex's up-market brand) seems to be taking cues from Hublot with this blacked out Pilot.
Tag Heuer 40th Anniversary Monaco: Car guys the world over will be salivating over this one, yours truly included. Branded on the face as "Heuer" (minus the TAG) just like the original worn in the film LeMans by Steve McQueen, the anniversary edition is limited to 1,000 worldwide.
Very Very Nice! I've been looking for an original Monaco from the days before Tag and Heuer camr together, looks like I dont' have to search anymore!
I love those things for their artistic value, but the best watch I've ever had is around $100 bucks...
Since I usually destroy or dump overboard at least one watch per season those $20 Timex are wonderful.
A must have for any yard/patio, plus you get to sleep-in on cloudy days. P.S. don’t forget to move clock a bit to the right in the fall.
Not applicable on cloudy days. Or at night. Seriously though, the Pershing watch is very nice looking... or it would be if not for the diamonds. Maybe it's just me, but I hate diamonds on a man's watch.
While I'd love to have another Navitimer, the Chronomat B01 is really getting my attention this year.
