It was Always a dream of mine to own a yacht and sail .. I believe the time and come to start :)

The problem s that I know nothing abuot this and i am looking for answers from more experience ppl, such as the ones in this forum...

First of all I looked for a not expensive boat over the Internet (unfortunately , my budget is limited :( )

I found a nice boat in the US that needs some fixes and I was wondering what you guys think (technical specs are followed)

    I have questions like -
how much will it cost to fix the problems the owner is talking about ?
is a boat like this is suitable to cruise lets say from turkey to France ?
What do you think maintnence cost on this type of boat?

In addition, the boat is located in the USA, and I would like to move it to the mediterranean (lets say cost of Greece) - how much something like this will cost ?

I sincerly appreciate any help I can get about this issue

    BOAT SPECS

45' Custom Aft Cabin Motor Yacht
    Built in 1990
    Price: US$ 8,995
Located in Milton FL United States
    Hull Material: Wood
    Engine/Fuel Type: Twin Diesel
    Boat ID: 76085-1830142

Great Fixer-Upper opportunity on a potentially magnificent yacht- being
sold As Is; needs lots of cosmetic work. The hull is cold-molded fiberglass
over wood, she has several soft spots on the deck, and the Twin Cat 3208's
both need work- one seized and the other needs rod bearings. The 7kw Onan
Genset is reported to run well, and 2 of the 3 central heat/air condition
units work. There is a full marine head with walk-in shower, large aft
sleeping cabin with queen pedestal bed centered, galley, and nice aft
salon/helm area, and a 2nd helm on the Flybridge. There is some nice woodwork
on the interior- the forward V area is gutted out.

    Hi Tom,

Even if this yacht was for free, I wouldn´t touch it. If you would like to have a yacht in the Med, I think Turkey or Greece is where you will find it at a reasonable price, they have often wooden boats that can be bargains if you can maintain such a boat. Also the voltage will work in European ports.

But I think you can go down to about 35 feet as your first boat...

Will I be able to sail across the MED with a 35ft ?

Both yes and no. Since you are asking, you could probably do better with a 35 than a 45-footer, but you need some basic education and a license to start with...;)

    HAHAHA , Obviously,
I will take a course before going on on my first cruise (both if I buy 45ft or 35ft)

Do you have any places I could look for boats in Turkey / Greece ?

    thank you

The I dea might sound good to you in theory but trust us, this is a bad idea. I learned the hard way about fixer uppers, let alone a wood hull boat needing major engine work with the wrong electricity. Other problems are bound to be numerous. I don't think anyone mentioned the cost of getting the boat across the ocean. I bet you would pay three times the cost of the boat to get it to you.
