    A close friend has recently purchased a 1994 50' Viking Convertible which had two previous owners.
    She is powered with MAN 820's. There are approximately 5000 hrs on the engines.
    After a 3 day shakedown fishing trip we encountered minor issues. Does anyone have any info about future potential issues that may be headed off at the pass with a little preventative Maintenance?

    Best option would be to do a full engine inspection. This would include;

    1) Testing of injectors
    2) Videoscope each cylinder
    3) Servicing of the heat exchanger
    4) Inspect Turbos.
    5) Oil analysis

    The findings would let you know if any further servicing is needed. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    5000 hours you might expect to do majors...see what you find when you follow Jorge's recommendation

    These motors usually go 6500 hours, but you are getting close. I have a customer with 6500 hours on his, but they're still running good.

    Issues were;
    1) After a cold start the stbd gear temp alarm was on. (loose Connection)
    2) After 2 hours running @1800 rpms, a diesel smell was detected in the cabin by a well trained wife, and a fuel leak was stopped before any serious consequences. An after market fuel shutdown sensor had been installed on both engines (rated to 4 psi). The required sensor has a 40 psi rating. The tip of the sensor had blown off and a quarter inch diesel stream was blasting off the overhead and running back over the engine and generator. Not Pretty!
    Fun Clean up!

    True.... Engine Survey was performed prior to purchase basic prevent recommended;
    1) have heat exchangers cleaned.
    2) continue Oil surveys.
    etc,etc

    I m it a MAN fan but in all fairness and bad after market sensor and a loose connection he's nothing to do with the engines.

    Was the sensor located on top of the secondary fuel filters? If so both of mine failed at different times. I was told not to replace them and plug the hole. They supposedly shut down the halon system in the event of a fire. I was lucky they didn’t cause a fire. Fortunately I had he right sized plug, cleaned up and kept on trucking.
