Hi, I have just caught the lunchtime news on the BBC and heard that a 24' Cabin Cruiser ( Motor Boat) had tipped over within 50' of the harbour wall at Whitby in England. The boat had 3 occupants 2 were picked up by lifeboat and one by Helicopter. The weather in the area at present is described as horrendous with a swell of up to 20' running. I can't find a link on the BBC website, I guess the news is too fresh to be there yet.
Here is a link to the story. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/skynews/20071123/tuk-two-die-after-capsize-rescue-off-yor-45dbed5_3.html
MSNBC just had a feed on a small boat overturned in Virginia Beach just S/E of the bridge tunnel. It looks like about a 30-35 footer. Confirmed reports are that there were 6 persons on board and all have been recovered. Unconfirmed reports are that 1 is deceased. The weather is clear, a small craft advisory is up with 15-20 kt. winds. Seas are running about 3-4 feet and I didn't see any whitecaps.
It's now confirmed that 2 are deceased and the remainder are being treated for hypothermia. They did manage to get a mayday off.
it's actually an 18 footer... The footage i saw indeed showed something pretty small with only one outdrive/lower unit sticking up. 6 people on an 18 footer in cold weather with a small craft advisory in effect... The report says they "phoned in", so IF accurate, they didnt even have a VHF... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090114/ap_on_re_us/capsized_boat
