Anybody ever stayed in Brenton cove in Newport on anchor - I have a 70 foot - cruising guide says moorings up to 60 foot only I prefer to stay on anchor - I like the seclusion
I been to Newport a few times and agree 100% about anchoring/mooring... Much better view and privacy compard to the packed marinas. Havent een there in 2 years but last time I was there there were only a handful of mooring for the 70 I run. They call them tall ship moorings run by the harbor and are almost always full in season, they are on the edge of the main lmooring field. They don't have a painter so you have to rig your own, which can be challenging when it's breezy as the "balls" are actually heavy foam pucks which can't be lifted out the water. Whenever I've Been lucky to get one I rig the line from the swim platform. Harbor masters are helfpul if you need All the moorings in Brenton cove are for smaller boats only. This leaves anchoring with very limited room between the channel and the moorings in Brenton cove. Holding is very good so you can set with normal scope and reduce after set to limit swing but I don't like leaving the boat unattended there.
any other spot to anchor there? I am always looking for that Bahamas kind of feeling like to taker down the tender and jetski and keep it for a few days in the water are there any other spots that would work in newport?
The ft Greene anchorage, just north or goat isl. may be a good spot, never tried it, don't remember how crowded it is. I once anchored in Potter Cove, across the bay, on the north side of the bridge, good holding but a bit far from the harbor. The anchorage by Jamestown is full of moorings in the shallow part and gets deep Very quickly
It's been a while since I've been there, but the Fort Greene anchorage south of the Pell bridge and north of the Goat Island causeway was used by a number of boats as an alternative to moorings. Active Captain has a listing for it with favorable reviews from this summer.
We have used Fort Greene anchorage on several occassions. Convenient to the mainland. Less crowded during the week. A little bumpy on weekends due to wakes , but generally protected from the prevailing southerlys. Tender service on the half hour, or just plop your dink in and run around the harbor. Enjoy! NP also has a large rental mooring field which might give you more peace of mind, if you don't keep someone aboard all the time.
