I am refurbishing a 1981 26' Carver Monterey. I would like to install an anchoring system like the newer boats, rather than the "pop thru the bow hatch" method that is utilized now.
Does anyone have any ideas for an install? Or, have you seen a smaller compact winch that would fit into the rope compartment under the bow?
I'd prefer a consealed unit rather than a deck mount.
If you have any ideas, I'm interested.
    Thanks

The biggest challenge on a small boat will be the depth of the anchor locker. If not deep enough, your anchor rode is going to pile up and jam when raising an anchor

Typically on that size boat you will usually see deck mounted windlass which re usually much cheaper and easier to install. The key is to install it as far back as possible so that the rode feeds into the deeper and wider part of the locker

Back then many boats had teak pulpits with roller or you can just put in a pulpitless roller which has become pretty common these days.

The specifics really depends on the deck and locker layout

Also consider the strength of your deck. I've run into several Carvers from that era with very spongy decks. I believe they were balsa.

My current and prior boat have above deck Horizon windlasses; never a problem with either. The only thing to add to prior advice is since you're going to the trouble/expense of a windlass, I recommend that your bow roller is 'self launching.' My current Carver came with just a straight and level bow roller, so even after installing a helm switch, someone would still have to go out to the bow and kick the anchor overboard. This I fixed by installing a self launching roller instead. I had to build up the platform a bit to get the downsloping angle so gravity would let the anchor slide off the front. Here's the end result:

If going for a windlass go horizontal, those vertical ones are a nightmare.,
