During drydock of one of our Yachts (Pershing 54) I found out that the oil of ASD12 was dark. I collected samples from both drives for analysis. Does anyone have any experience for similar problem? (the boat has been bought last summer and as far as I know the oil has not been changed the last three years)
Darkness of lube oil may or may not be a bad sign, it would be helpful to know what the fluid actually is. I run 80W-90 gear oil in my ASD 12's, it is drained and refilled with fresh gear oil anually. I have noticed that the year old gear oil is darker than the fresh stuff. What you are seeing could be the oxidation of 3 years use. It is more of concern if the gear oil is milky; this means you have a bad seal that is letting water in. Goof luck with your boat, I swear by Arneson Drives, and would be happy to answer any other questions or concerns you may have about them.
Without knowing what was put in there in the first place, it's hard to know if dark black oil is a bad thing. Regardless, the best thing to do is fill it back up with nice clean gear oil, (unless Twin Disc reccomends something else), and run it for a season. Drain and refill at next haulout. ASD's are mechanically simple, and robust. Hopefully you will get long and trouble free service from yours now that you have the opportunity to put them on a regular maintenance schedule. I do highly reccomend purchasing a spare seals set if there is not already one aboard; they are not the type pf part that you can just run down to the chandlery for, and having the spares will save you any unnecessary down time should you need to service them mid season.
