I currently have a fish finder/depth sounder on my boat but would like to add a back up depth finder. I am looking for a stand alone instrument or gauge just for the depth. Any suggestions on units would be greatly appreciated.

If your fishfinder has dual frequency transducer 50/200khz, than any display that will take a NMEA input and use a transducer of 235KHZ, most common, or 177khz will work fine. seperate as much as you can for good measure

Not really sure what frequency my current unit operates on but I will dig into the owners manual to find out more. Thanks for the tip!

Most dual frequency fishfinders are 50/200. We added a Garmin GMI-10 display with a NMEA 2000 transducer that sounds at 180khz. We wanted true redundancy and found that if the GMI-10 was networked to the primary Garmin NMEA 2000 network, it would use the network depth. As a standalone device, the big drawback to the GMI-10 is that there is no provision for keel offset.
