I will be purchasing a 36-39 sedan bridge style boat w/i the next four months. i plan to either dock the boat in New Orleans (3 hours away from my home), or Destin/PCB (8 hours away, and where we have a condo). i am concerned about what services are typically available for my boat's protection, in the event of a storm. would you typically haul out a boat of this size, if a Cat 1 was approaching? Can most marinas do that? Do they store the boat locally? Do they check on the boat during storms to make sure lines are secure, etc.? Any thoughts on this would be apprecitated.
It really depends but most marinas do not provide these services unless specifically contracted. There is big difference between a marina and a marina/yard. Yards provide additional services... Whatever you decide make sure it is all deemed in writing The decision to haul or not is a complex one. If you can haul, it is obviously better especially since most policies will cover a portion of the costs. Unfortunately there a many areas with limited yard space where hauling isnt an option and the boat will have to be moved to safe location outside the landfall aera. If you do haul out, make sure the yard will not be affected by surge and make sure the boats are properly secured. Many boats get damaged in yards during storms When you leave the boat in season, you should at the very least use heavier lines and set them so that minimal action is needed for your average tropical storm which may not require a haul out. Finally, too many times folks made a decision based on the storm strength 1 to 2 days before landfall. Nowadays NHC forecaters have become very skilled in predicting track and landfall but are still lagging behind when it comes to intensity forecasts. There has been many examples of storms unexpectedly intensifying or weakening in a 24 hour period And one last thing... Location location location. A boat can survive a cat 2 with no damage in a wide sheltered slip but suffer heavy damage in a TS if berthed in a narrow exposed slip
Pascal, thanks for this great information. I plan to visit several marina's in the Destin/PCB area in two weeks...and then the options in the New Orleans area in August. Now I know what features to actually look for!! Thanks.
