I have to say it is hard to believe that someone would spend that amount of money on a yacht. Plus, Im very curious to know which kind of engine is propelling a yacht with 100,000 kg of gold and platinum...

And even though most pictures are just edited (or not) from Baia 100 pictures, the one of the aft deck is pretty unique (but might be a rendering...).

A similar one to that which powers a boat with 100,000 kg of steel, what does the material have to do with the powering?

Sadly, it turns out to be a hoax perpetrated by Baia, the yacht builder, to get free ink. Which they certainly did, because the "gold yacht" story was snapped up by newspapers and magazines around the world. Probably didn't help the public attitude toward yachts, tho.

Well I guess Baia would be entitled to do something like this right? However, how does it make them look after everyone else figures that nothing they said is true and how impractical it would be etc?

That's unfair - It is a PR stunt, but not by Baia.

They aren't mentioned in any of the articles about it, which would rather defeat the object. Another individual and his supposed good work is named, however.

There is an article about the veracity of the story on another yacht related website - the named individual did not respond to requests for further information/clarification. Baia were contacted and confirmed that it was hogwash and the images were taken from their website and used without permission.

I think that is the worst aspect of this - that an innocent 3rd party has had their reputation affected by the fact that this nonsense has been sent to major "news" publications who regurgitated it verbatim without taking the smallest amount of time to see if it is true.

PFJW, very true, I struggled to find any mention of the builder. I only found info on a guy who does most this "gold planting", like on phones etc. It seems like it's just a plug for himself.

No disrepect to the builder of the boat, but real gold planting to one of there boats would be like doing it to your Audi, or BMW... Nice, but a waste of everyones time.

Maybe this is just me being nitpicky (my wife says I'm way to retentive about details) but you can't actually "plate" composites, can you? Sticking shiny "gold" vinyl on a car/boat/cellphone doesn't make it "gold plated".

It just makes it tacky!

Kevin, as detail on what ever the object is, is fine I think. But as a "feature" or a "major component" (hull) of the object I think looks a little tacky.

I agree with you, but I guess it's just personal taste as well.

Also, if it was real, they would struggle getting a good finish...?
