Several colleagues notified me of a thread that I SHOULD have known about because I'm a member of NSXPrime, a forum for NSX enthusiasts. Before I post the URL, I'd like to use this as an example of the repercussions that can follow self-promotion, fraud, or posing as a 3rd party on forums.

Lars & Kevin work diligently every day to ensure the posts from new members "add up". It's a little detective work, a lot of common sense, but mostly... it's become instinctive because they've seen every angle, no matter how sublime. When in question, I use my resources for final verification.

Getting back on topic... this thread is seriously entertaining, but seriously scary. The thread is only one week old, has over 1500 posts and has been viewed by nearly 500,000 people so far. At current, you may not be able to access the thread because NSXPrime's server is being hammered. Forums from all over the net are starting to link to this thread.

The Short Story: the thread started as a new member participating on the forum, establishing a little credibility with a few posts, then proceeding to promote his gambling website within his posts. He was quickly "outed" by some astute members and then... his real identity and checkered past was uncovered. This guys life will never be the same now.

The thread starts out a little slow, but quickly escalates to over 100 Photochops that are absolutely comedic. BTW, this thread may set an Internet precedent. It is likely to be picked up by newspapers, television, etc.

Interesting subject Carl... I'll be keeping an eye on that thread.... when it's viewable.

I'd hate to be one of those folks sitting there "mashing the 'reload' button". :D

Just received word the admin of NSXPrime has been contacted by several news media sources for interviews.

The following is a lead-in to the story by an independent blog. For those of us who don't have time to read 1500+ posts, the link below tells the short story. What it doesn't capture is the Photochop humor of this guy being "owned".

Well I got all the way through page 5 this time before their poor server gave up on me...

It's a great read though! :D And a perfect example of handling the "worst case scenario"... the fact that they (the mods) let him come back to defend himself, at which point he dug a hole about 10 times deeper than before was utterly hilarious. That thread has gone international... that spammer will forever live on in infamy. LOL

    Happy New Year btw

Scary at the end...but it is not over at all - last post is now 20 minutes old. This leaves some questions about privacy in the net and what everyone should write and/or hide in his profile in what forum he ever is.

But afterall I have received 26 spam emails today - and the day is not over yet - so this "Nick" got it right anyway.

    Hi,

To add injury to his insult and embarrassment for being so **** stupid he will probably have to move home and leave no forwarding address or get a bigger mail box as all his data is here for the world to see.

The gambling chap was linked to on a car forum I'm a member of. Not the sharpest tool in the box.

Since you know who found the topic, I share Kevin's regard to the question why the moderators let this person come back. This leads to several other legal infringements by regular members of the NSX forum like posting someones private address and clearing himself by refering to it as being a public record. The nature of the accusation at that point has legaly not been resolved and the Nick dude is not legaly accused.

The fact that the administrators have continued the thread would appear that they would like to torment Nick dude (which is absolutely understandable, yet slightly inappropriate for guys who like to discuss burned rubber and racing fuel fumes), possibly to set an example for others.

I have a feeling that they kind of liked the media attention too.

At least the hosting company will have ball when they send the bill for the data overload.

I think it's more of a case of "teaching by example". People are getting more and more frustrated and sick to death of spam... the nsxprime folks used an opportunity presented to them to shame this scammer on an international scale previously unheard of. Why is the thread so huge...? Not because of anything Sitko is doing anymore. It's because people are applauding the efforts of the members of nsxprime.

I agree that it's a lot of fun to hack on this guy.
The NSX forum has no delays here in Holland. I guess by now the hype will be getting slightly less.

I found myself in the unlucky situation to have not entered my office email during christmas. Imagine what you find after 5 days with 2 busy mailboxes.
My trash bin indicated 507 deleted unread messages if i'm not mistaking.
If only I had the time to track down these spammers.

There most be someplace where you can forward or report these mails to?
    Any suggestions?

I just sent a PayPal to Lud, the admin of NSXPrime to help cover his bandwidth costs. Several other forums admins are sending payments as well.

The issue at stake hits a nerve for many forums users, but mostly for the administrators of forums who are faced with an increasingly difficult environment... not from our members, but from those who are trying to benefit from the communities we've built.

Questions have been raised about the legality of the issue. I'm taking a proactive approach, along with a group of leading webmasters, that have been building a fund for such an event. Most of the fund has been used to hire lobbyists that are fighting to bring about Internet Standards, but we also set aside monies to protect ourselves should the need occur. FYI to YF's members... this is where some of the banner proceeds go each month.

Call me a minority, but I'm one of those people who believe we should all be responsible for our own actions... and we should be held accountable. Because we can't count on the Internet Police to clean up our streets, we have to protect ourselves. In the court of public opinion, this fellow Nick has been served. Let this serve as warning to others.

I just can't believe that guy didn't pay a little extra and get privacy put on his domain name. That's where if someone looks you up in Whois, a third party company name and address shows, not your personal name and address. Rather have that then some cracker showing up on my doorstep (have enough of them in my town). lol

As an Admin of another forum (one which is mostly off-topic discussion) we've been vigilant as to what is and is not a "legal infringement."

To take a person's name from a background check, such as would be done by a private investigator, attorney, or police officer, and make it public is unlawful. To take a person's willfully published records (domain name registration information, public state incorporation records, liquor license information, court report (FOIA or public record) information, registered sexual offender information, or other matters of public record) which are not concealed but open to any citizen seeking those records for any reason, and post them on an internet forum is in no way any infringement on that person's expectation of privacy. It is not a violation of the law. It may be in poor taste, as so much tends to be in some fora, but it is legal.

Acting on that information (harassment, physical or verbal abuse, stalking, or any of a score of other behaviors) may be unlawful, however, and that's where Admins get nervous about such information being posted. These Admins obviously weighed that risk. Let's hope for their sake nobody acts up, and they don't find themselves explaining to anyone in court.

    Scam BoatDesign websites ??

Here is an interesting email I got the other day that I feel may be the latest scam technics from China....correct me if I'm wrong. I submit this as it may be the beginnings of scaming some of our boatdesign websites
    ________________________________________________
    Dear CEO,

We are the domain name registration organization in Asia, which mainly deal with international company's in china. We have something important need to confirm with your company.

On the Jan 3, 2008, we received an application formally. One company named "Goodwood Holdings Limited Company" wanted to register following

    Domain names:

    runningtideyachts.biz
    runningtideyachts.info
    runningtideyachts.cn
    runningtideyachts.com.cn
    runningtideyachts.net.cn
    runningtideyachts.hk
    runningtideyachts.tw
    runningtideyachts.com.tw
    runningtideyachts.mobi

    Internet brand keyword:
    Runningtideyachts

    Through our body.

After our initial examination, we found that the keywords and domain names applied for registration are as same as your company's name and trademark. These days we are dealing with it. If you do not know this company, we doubt that they have other aims to buy these domain names. Now we have not finished the registration of Norwood Holdings Limited Company yet, in order to deal with this issue better, Please contact us by telephone or email as soon as possible.

    Best Regards,

    ...so I wrote them back to ask that they not honor this request from 'Goodwood Holdings'. Here is their reply;

    Dear brian,

Thank you for your letters in reply

Are you sure that you have no relation with Goodwood Holdings Limited Company? If so, the Goodwood Holdings Limited Company may register these domain names compete first.

We knew you have registered the domain name "runningtideyachts.com" and own the intellectual property (own the trademark runningtideyachts). This is why we informed you. But now Goodwood Holdings Limited Company wanted to apply for other domain names and internet brand you have not registered yet.

I can provide you further information about Goodwood Holdings Limited Company . According to our working experience, there are 3 possibilities:

1.Goodwood Holdings Limited Company is a domain names grabber. They want to grab your domain names and sell to you when you need in future.

    2. your competitor let Goodwood Holdings Limited Company to register your domain names, let your customers feel confusion.

    3. They register the domain for imitating you web. And invade some market of you or link to some illegal porno webs or sell to your competitors, even something worse.I understand that all the foresaid are not the situation you need.

Just because of your registered trademark, so we inform of your company. But the domain names registration is open in the world. This is international domain name registration principle. We are only a domain name registration organization in Asia, We have no right to prevent other people's registration. So required by China government to inform your company to protect your interest. As the company whose trademarks relate to the applied domains, you will get the priority to register these domain names and Internet brand name. The best way is that you use your priority to protect them, there are two advantage : On one hand, it avoid they infringe your rights. On the other hand, you can expand your chinese marktet and let more chinese person know your products, If you think these domain names and Internet brand name are useful for you, we can send an application form to you and help you register these within dispute period. If you don't think their application will affect your benefit, we will pass their application. There is a time limit.

I look forward to hearing from you. If you have any questions, pls call me.

    Best Regards,

    Juliana Fu

    Brian,

I got this solicitation as well. It's a clever scam, but here's a little advice... let 'em buy the other extensions. If they publish a site with any content relevant to your own, it will only serve to bump you up in search engine rankings.

I was recently made aware of another low-life attempt to capitalize on our traffic. A broker in our industry, Bollman Yachts, launched "yachtforums.net" in their feeble minded, futile attempt to lure victims into buying their boats. Little do they know how they benefited YF by doing this. Idiots!

I thought about that also, but here was one phrase in their letter that caught my attention, " They register the domain for imitating you web. And invade some market of you or link to some illegal porno webs..."

Don't think this would be too healthy

Four days later and the thread on NSX Prime has now eclipsed 2000 posts and 750,000 views. This is significant because these are "real" numbers. Prime is a vB based forum, in which there are no "script multipliers" to double, triple or quadruple the post count. This was one of the offered "perks" of using a certain forum service, of which I had "Zero" interest. (read between the lines)

Misleading numbers are the reason we are working to establish a validation certificate that authenticates website statistics.

Clandestine tactics based on the essential motivators; fear & pleasure. The wording within your domain name has little or no value for other purposes. If it was RunningWildYachts, then a search might bring up "wild girls on big boats" at some point.

So just to help us tech-less idiots with internet reality, after hearing of your payment asssistance to NSXPrime, does each post cost you?

Sorry for the extreme ignorance. I had to google "Bots" to understand your last PM.
