I am currently very close to purchasing a 1996/1997 47’ Viking Convertible. It has the MAN 680 HP 2848LTE 401. Does anyone have any feedback on these engines? How are the costs for service and repair? How dependable are they? How many typical hours before major overhaul? Any opinion or other information or experience in regards to either boat or engines would be greatly appreciated.

I own a 1995 47 viking, unbelievable in a following, beam and cornering sea, better than average in a head sea (friends 50 Hatteras is better, but not nearly as good in large following or beam sea). As with most vikings from this era when in tight large head seas it is a bit wet, but nothing like the older 45 (I have a friend with one). I have the 680Hp MAN, no complaints there, economical @ 1900-1950 doing 23-25 knots, @2100 your flying. The engine room is real big (great access to everything), can’t compare to either older or newer 45 which is wider.
as for cost of maintenance and dependability, i think their great in both categories. I'm not sure when they will need to be majored I'm sure that would depend on how hard they are pushed and how well they are maintained. I have over 1900 hours at this point and they run great

    Good luck,
    Bob

Thanks for the nice info on the 47, which I'm considering vs. the older 47 Buddy Davis, the 2005 or so Riviera, and perhaps the older Hatt (46, I think, or 45). I guess the fairly deep draft helps but the pound at head sea, and the sparay is a bit of a surprise.

So, do you wish you'd gotten the 800 Mann engines, instead of the 680? Would I save a bunch on fuel with the 680s instead? I don't need to go that fast, but how fast do you cruise, at an RPM comfortable to you, the boat, your ears, and the engines?

Would the 800s leave lousy room for service?

Are more modern common rail electronic engines a tease for you, for the next rebuild time, or failure?

thanks, Chris Amsden in San Pedro and Rolling Hills, SoCal, Ca.
