1983 42 post questions

Greetings svalliant and welcome to Yacht Forums. My last boat was a 1981 42 Post. I did a very complete refit on her. You may have seen her, she still lives in your neighborhood at Kent Narrows. The aft bulkhead and door on that boat were painted off white to match the boat's gelcoat. I repainted it with Brightsides during my ownership. It blended well and held a shine even better that the fiberglass. I do agree that it is a cleaner newer look. Since that door and bulkhead are somewhat out of the weather, being under the overhang, the finish should hold up pretty well. Assuming that the finish is now varnish, you may even get away with just sanding the gloss off then priming and painting. If you leave the varnish under the paint, it would then perhaps be possible to return to the natural finish at a later date if that is desired. Personally, I would not leave any more teak than you feel is necessary. Does she still have the teak trim on the sides of the house, deck cabinets, covering boards, and flybridge trim? If so, thats plenty to maintain. Picture attached is my former boat. Not a great shot of the aft, but you get the idea.

I have no opinion on the transom door. Mine did not have one.

Brightside is an Interlux product. It is a one part polyurethane. I generally roll and tip. It takes some practice to develop some finesse with the application, but the results are quite satisfactory.
