any one have any accurate insite in my quest for information . ihave a 1976 42 post which i have had for qute some time now, did a total refit repower interios wiring. mains gears etc. mycurrent situation is on my last haul out for bottom work i decideded to have a bottom peel done, the yard removed two passes and went down toabout 1/8 in ( two 1/16in pass's) after final sanding . they re wet with a hot coat vinyl ester, did 2 layups of 1 oz weeved mat , wettting each side and rolling out, then two coats epoxy and 2 a/f...... 8 months later total failer . and all came off, completley down to the peeled substate foundation........i'm back at yard now and doing a redo... the resin (cook) people came in asking about ... WHAT post built the boat from.??? polyester or vinyl ester... as well they are suggesting that wax was put in the origional lay up...... any insite.....it's hull # 48 of the 42'
Wow, that's a heck of a failure. I don't know how helpful my info is, but on the 1998 hulls I believe the first two passes in the mold were vinylester (sp?) to reduce water intrusion.
indeed, sheeted off in large pieces. and when a chisel was put behind the layer it simply ran like pulling up leniolium, while the yard is working to make right. its quite a lesson... i had them do two test patches yesterday. 1 had #24 heavy sanding, solvent wipe, hot coat V.E lam resin wet 2oz clothe and roll AND THEN RIB ROLL... the other 80 grit sanding , hot coat , 20z clothe rolled on wet and no rib rolling...........today 24hrs later.. the one patch wouldn't come off and actually we split the glass... the other without the wipe and rib roll peeled like the orig issue....anyhow i encorage anyone doing a peel job on a older (25+) years do some test to save some serious aggravation and possible significant issues... no one came up with a for sure reason.(surveyor, resin house, resin mfg, yard, ).. so the test patches reveled some steps wihch some yards may not implement as sop....
