    We're fast approaching a milestone...

About a month ago, a discussion took place about when we would reach the 10k member mark. Someone said early 2008. I remember thinking it would happen sooner. So, I did few calculations and my best guesstimate was December 10th, plus or minus a day. But, I was off. Looks like this will happen around December 6th.

To give you an idea how fast YF has grown, about a year ago I questioned if we would break the 9k mark by the end of 2007. I based this projection on our average daily rate of new memberships (back then). But 2007 has been a good year for YF. It took 3 years to reach 6,000 members. That was in late December 2006. Since then, we have added more than 4,000 members.

YF member #10,000 has a one-in-two chance of being a bot. I'm deleting as many bots each day, as we have new members signing up. I thought about prohibiting internet e-mail addresses, i.e. yahoo, gmail, hotmail, etc. Better than 50% of the bots use these extensions. The problem is... so do people who travel around the world, such as yacht captains, therefore we'll continue to play our daily game of battle bots!

    Looking forward to 2008!

Yes, this milestone has practically come way faster than I expected it to come. This will be great, what are you conjuring up Carl for the 10,000th legit member?

We certainly have alot of active members based on a non duplicate system which is great! It says alot about this website. Early congrats Carl.

    Carl,
Congratulations on the fantastic milestone. I know you have worked hard in bringing the best to the site. And thanks goes to all the active members who contribute information and assist others.
You, my friend, are like the pied piper of the internet.
Glad to be a part of YF history.

Good grief! Sounds like the Internet needs an E-mail police? Or some kind of filter for bots ...

    Carl, Congrats on 10k.

If it has to be a bot, lets hope for a fembot!

And speaking of milestones, Carl, you approaching 10,000 posts. According to my best estimates, you should hit that around June or July.

    Yes, congratulations.
I'm sure the K's will tick off much faster now that your part of yachting mainstream.
May I suggest Carl treat the 10K member to say, a complementary week on Kismet, or maybe a YF polo.

The number of posts I have is misleading. Whenever I publish a review or run a press release, it adds to my post count. Even uploading the wallpapers has added nearly 300 posts to my bottom line. If you had to count the number of useful posts I've made... it's probably under 50.

If a week on Kismet was the grand prize, every one of us would be signing with new memberships!

Kudos are greatly appreciated guys, but we're all in this together. I'm just here to battle bots, sling a few adjectives and learn from the best.

It's our regulars that make YF rock! MANY thanks!!

An enterprising soul might consider the formation of Bot Forums.
To what end, I have no idea...slow day, I guess.

Anyway, a tip of the ol' champagne glass to Carl Camper for the ten thousandth non-bot, breathing, literate, and hopefully informative as the rest of you, member!

With 10,000 active members, that would mean at least 100 new posts everyday if merely 1% of members posted something everyday.

So why don't current members post more than they actually do? Only, I've contributed to a number of threads here over the last few months. In a vibrant forum, I would not have been waiting literally days or weeks before a reply. OK, so maybe my own posts might have been ill-considered or otherwise. It still doesn't explain the dearth of new threads or subjects...?!

A healthy forum would already have had the Scuderia Feadship fans up in arms here...?!

At this point in time, I would gladly welcome even some more outrageous comments, if only to break the monotony (as I see it)...?!

    Scuderia Feadship... clever!

We've deliberated the question of low forum participation before. I believe the answer lies in YF's distractions, i.e., reviews, news, banners, etc. I know that a good number of owners lay low, using the PM system to ask questions privately. I get my share of 'em.

Maybe it is better that YF is not as active as mainstream sites. Maybe it is better to have a few interesting, educational posts, as opposed to mindless banter? I enjoy the latter on occasion, but taken to the extreme... it is the absolute downfall of a forum.

Keep in mind, our world is small at best. Very few people have seen these boats, none-the-less owned them, so we have our share of curiosity seekers. Who can blame 'em...

Agreed. To be honest, most of the contributions are accurate, concise, and to the point. Maybe we need a few alternative thinkers (or idiots) to mix-it-up a bit. Where's TEENA when you need her. Oh- we have taksan on the move... :D

Well, at least there's always that "airship" guy.

    Kidding! :D

Personally, I'd much rather read just 1 informative and well-written post than 10 baseless opinions. It's cliché, but quality wins out over quantity any day of the week.

So the rest of you can "spot-a-bot", this is the profile of member # 9,998. They are easily identified because the Biography will ALWAYS be "Man". The location and occupation are always identical. These rodents are fast becoming a pain the @$$, but if I don't delete them, they could theoretically attempt to take over our servers. I have measures in place to prevent this, but it's never happened, so I can't say for sure.

Here's the profile of this bot, which has now been deleted...

:) Congratulations Carl, and the YF community.
I'm a member of various on-line forums, some manic, others tumbleweed city. For me at least, YF is balanced just right....sometimes I for one would like to input more, but time and self-censorship (I quite often write out a post only to think better of it and cancel) slow me down. Not sure how my sense of humour translates sometimes either...what works fine on a quick-fire car forum may not go down to well on here methinks. Universally difficult to gauge intellects and personalities in a web-based community, but it feels like family in here. I dont get to visit family as much as I could perhaps, but when I do the welcome is always warm:)
