The new ruling makes provision for a step-by-step plan to be implemented from Sept 1st 2009, according to which the incandescent lamp and other particularly energy-intensive light products like halogens are to be phased out in stages. Some boatbuilders already started the new LEDs, which are much more reliable than in the past... We must be well prepared for the changeover.
I could be mistaken, but I believe Australia started this phase out a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly incandescent bulbs can only be purchased for specialty applications, not for general consumer use.
This was passed into law in the US and will take effect (I think) in 2011. I sure hope the lighting industry gets a handle on the color of the light emitted from LED's and florescent because right now they are terrible.
the "new" CFL bulbs come in 3 color temp, you need to get the warmer one. It's not always easy to see the specs on the packages and indeed the two colder ones look awful they use a lot less power and when you run the boat on inverter it does make a difference. obviously, there are other issues incl. the mercury they contain... LEDs are great but cost is the big issue... hopefully they will come down in price as production increase. in any case these new rules are just another example of feel good short sighted stuff our politicos come up with. I read that many incandescents were made in the US whereas most if not all CFLs come from China... I guess they didnt' take the impact of shipping into account...
Yep, politicians are the smart guys. First banning mercury and then pushing lamps containing mercury. Just to stop a climate change of 0.00001°C...
This will be a pain for me. In my Darkroom I need lamps that come on and go off instantly. Guess I'm going to have to hoard some.
now we all face mecury contamination and this will create more work for the enviromental firms around the world
Study also shows that in winter, the loss of heat provided by incandescent bulbs has to be made up by other energy sources, minimal savings if any..
No officer, I'm not a smuggler, those things just look like lightbulbs, they are actually the boat's emergency flotation devices.
