Hello everyone, My name is Christopher. and I plan on buying a yacht soon! And I wanted to find out some more info. everyone I talk to I feel is leaving me with more Questions then I had. so here is what I am having a problem with.. first is, I want to go from FLA to the UK and i was looking at the burgess yacht the "Big D" and "MUSE" right now. and i want to know with an able crew will it be smooth sailing "other then weather". and how many ports do you think i will need to stop at for Gas? as for the Crew, I want 5-6 "+ a Cap" man crew. now i live in the USA right now, will my Crew have to be from the US with US passports? Thanks guys... i am the biggest noob when it comes to yacht, i use own a few small sail boats yrs ago "26 footer" but when it comes to a yacht i am lost at sea..!
Hi, Welcome to Yacht Forums. If you are leaving the US you can take any nationality you want as long as they have the appropriate travel docs for where you are going next. The number of stops depends upin the range of your boat. A Miami, Bermuda, Horta to the south of the UK run gives you a max leg of approx 1800 nm ( I am doing this from memory as I am at home now not on a boat and it's been a few years since I travelled that way). If you pick your weather carefully and wait till July/August you might barely see a ripple all the way. I went with Owners onboard from Miami/Nassau/Bermuda/Horta/Gib/Monaco in 1988 in August on a 50m motoryacht and did not see any waves at all. It was kinda spooky at night seeing the stars shining back out of the sea. I have come the other way Viareggio to Ft Lauderdale in Sept/Oct 2002 and it was the roughest trip of my life. Whatever boat you want to buy spend a bit of time and some money and get a thorough survey done, it could save you money in the short term and your skin in the long term.
Well, as far as I know, (now this may have changed, but I did consult Google Earth just prior to this reply ) there is no stop between FL and the UK. Crossing the pond is a one shot run. Typically you'll go from FL to the Canary Islands, and then north, making your next stop along Portugal or France should you choose. However if you can make the distance from FL to the Canary Islands, you would / should be able to chart towards the UK. Regarding your question on immigration, and crew citizenship, I'm not sure I understand it. If your crew are US passport holders, then it shouldn't be a problem if I understand what you're asking. However I'm far from an expert in Immigration and Customs laws.
You should re consult Google earth for that one as it is possible as stated above to have several stops if one needs to. I have not personally heard of anyone going to the Canaries from Fl on the way to Europe- You would be sailing against the trades.
Hi, with Big D you have all the fuel you need, even if I would probably take the northern route through the Azores anyway. Muse I would put on a Dockwise yacht transport. And among the yachts in this price range from Burgess, I would have taken Paraiso and sailed the world...
Welcome as well. Point of clarification. Will the yacht be flagged US or something else? From my limited knowledge on this, isn't the flag of the vessel a major determining factor as to the crew make up?
Yes, Fl, Bermuda, Horta is an option for a northern route. My mistake. The mild humor in my post was apparently missed entirely.
the ship will be flaged for the US. unless you guys think other wise... iv looked at ways of getting over there and stops. and all looks good. a friend of mine who caps a charter ship said there has been priates off the cost of africa. so i would be best to take the north route to ensure the crews safe for acts like these!
Regarding flagging: I'd recommend you search YF and read several discussions on the topic, as well consult maritime council. There are pros and cons to both and each with very depending on your needs, desires, conditions, etc.
Contact a good marine documentation company such as Elaine Grossman or others and they can advise you of all of the plusses and minuses of being flagged US or say Caymen.........
I just pulled up a map by ICC Commercial Crime Services (CCS) on Google maps that showed (1) attempted attack north of Liberia and (1) actual attack in the med during 2008. Enjoy your cruise.
WOW thatnks for the heads up on the ICC i pulled up there site full of good info. that has always be somthing i worryed about. when i was younger living in verobeach fla i use to sail to the bahamas with friends all the time and loved it but i thought with a motor yacht it would be best to see the world.! thanks for the fast replys on every thing...
I would buy a sail, but i did it so much as a kid and now i just want to sit back and enjoy. also i will be hosting some events as well..
big yacht If you're the owner, you sail when you want. Big motor sailor, sounds like a civilized way to go, and your fuel could be less.
I enjoy Small Sailboats, I mean Sail yachts are very very very nice. but I am looking at M/Y. thanks again everyone for the help.. means alot to me..!
