Collision at Sea

Ok so which boat had the right-of-way? My vote would be the bigger boat because of less maneuverability. Normally it's the boat to starboard but not in this case I don't think.

There's a youtube video of a Coast Guard boat coming up on a little outboard boat's port side. The guys in the outboard boat were looking at another boat and the CG boat just ran right over them. Luckily the guys weren't badly injured.

There is no regulation that says big boats have the right to plow under small boats(although by the end of summer I sometimes wish there were ). That said, BOTH boats are at fault, but the one to starboard appears to have right of way from the little information shown.

No I agree, but there is regulation that provides for large vessels that are restricted in their ability to maneuver usually by sandbanks, rocks, draft to not comply with the "normal" give way rule.

Absolutely. That's why I added "from the little information shown". It appears to be an open sea area with good visability. Personally I wouldn't want to be either captain explaining that one to the boss or the CG.

When I first saw this video, I watched it a few times over because it appeared that the wake of the smaller boat indicated that it had just made a sharp turn to port.

Maybe I'm seeing things.

I see the port turn too. Looks like the little boat was trying to pass in front of the yacht but chickened out at the last second and tried to pass on the yachts stbd side. Looks like a very avoidable accident. But the thing that caught my eye was the person on the bow of the little boat. You can see him or her run away after the boats come apart.

Good afternoon all,

I was email this video link from Trade Only, It is a reminder to all to follow the rules, and to deviate from the rules when necessary. I can't imagine two captains being so irresponsible.

That's an old one. Been around the net a long time. I think I read (maybe on YF) that occurred in the Red Sea.

I never have gotten any details on it though. Anybody know if there were injuries? I looks like the pulpit crashed right into the bridge of the smaller vessel. I'd hate to see that coming at me if I were at the helm!!

It appears the Yacht (where the camera was mounted) is either stopped or maybe even reversed as the smaller boat didn't seem to be pushed away in the collision as would be the case if there were forward momentum on the larger yacht.

What was the outcome? Anybody cited or license in jeopardy?

It does appear to be in the Red Sea, note the Egyptian flag, and the vessel with the camera appears to be moving forward based on the water moving by , the fact that is looks like the smaller vessel would have passed clear if the camera vessel wasn't moving forward and how the smaller vessel is pushed aside on impact.

There is no prop wash towards the bow so it also does not appear to be in reverse at any time.

If you look at the propwash from 0:32-0:34 it looks like the smaller boat turned towards the larger one.
