    Hi All,
I am trying to plan a 5 day trip around Bodrum, Turkey for April. I have never been around that area before, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to good ports/anchorages. It will be a mostly yacht based trip, so nice swimming and diving spots are a must. The yacht is 90 meters plus, so cozy bays may be a struggle! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!
    thanks

    Hello,

Bodrum is situated in the gulf of 'Gokova', where there are numerous bays which you could visit. However, since these bays are accessible by land, there will be many daily-tour boats and other small craft in proximity to your yacht. This sometimes disturbs the guests onboard.

As an alternative, if you set a southern course from Bodrum to the gulf of 'Hisaronu', you could find better anchorages with more privacy.

The third choice would be to go around the 'Mugla' (Bodrum) peninsula northward, to the bays situated in the popular vacation spots close to Bodrum. For example, 'Golturkbuku' is the most popular one but has the sea quality problem due to the coastal fish farms nearby. The gulf is named 'Gulluk' on the map.

Would you prefer popular spots or more privacy? If you could state your priorities I will happily write a more detailed reply.

    Regards,
    vr

    VR,
thanks for the great info, much appreciated. I think we´ll remain in Gokova as we only have 5 days available. The diving looks pretty good along the coast east of Bodrum and down to the seven islands. Is it worth heading around to Gocek? Is Bodrum just as good for shoreside nightlife and dining?

    Greetings again,

My recommendations below would create a clockwise itinerary, where the Knidos bay at the end would position your vessel for a direct northern return course to Bodrum Marina.

Day 1. ‘Cokertme bay’, on a direct easterly course from Bodrum Marina before FLW 3s 8M.

    2. ‘Degirmen Buku/ Bay’, near Zeytinli Island – could be named ‘British Bay’.

    3. 'Kargili Bay', (Longoz) 2,8nm west of Degirmen Bay

    4. 7 Islands

    5. The Knidos Bay at the Datca peninsula’s tip. Lighthouse FLW (2) 5s 15M is nearby. There are ancient amphitheatres which your guests might like to see.

You could navigate in these locations easier by using the Turkish M.A. Map #224, 311 and 312(larger in scale).

My opinions on the local nightlife are subjective. The centre of Bodrum has become a chicken coop in the last 5 years. The bars and the nightclubs will not be satisfactory for someone who steps off a 90-meter yacht. ‘Gumbet bay’ is even worse.

The best spot would be ‘Golturkbuku’ (a Bodrum village in the north) which is accessible by ground transportation from Bodrum marina. I would recommend these names if you happen to get there: ‘Bianca Beach for happy hour, Ship Ahoy and adjacent clubs for a late-night drink. They also serve decent food. They could stay at ‘Iber Hotel’ near Golturkbuku for a night. Another alternative would be the Bodrum Kempinski Hotel, which has a beautiful bay all to itself. It is in an isolated spot as well.

To answer your question concerning Gocek, you could find what you are looking for in the gulf of Gokova. There are restaurants near Bodrum Marina that are good same as Gocek, but the nightlife might feel too casual in the touristic spots. Try 'Golturkbuku' which might offer better choices.

I apologize for not having GPS coordinates with me, I do not have my pilot books and charts at the moment.

    Regards,
    vr

    Hi Vr,
thanks again for the great info. It will give me a few more options to present to the owner. With regards to the 7 islands, is this Yedi Adalar? Do you know what sort of anchorage it is on the eastern side of the islands, it looks pretty sheltered, but I´m more worried about swinging room for a 90+ m yacht. The other option would be bordubet limani. Are the beaches there and Yedi Adalar good, and is there unrestricted access, fire or bbq restrictions in place?
    thanks for all your info

Yes, it is named 'Yedi Adalar'. The 'Gokagac Limani'(the closest southern one next to the western entrance to the 7 islands) and 'Karaagac Limani' (the one next to Gokagac) do have enough room. The other three inlets are quite narrow as you could see on the map.

The beaches are decent but covered with small stones instead of sand. You could make a fire if you want. Access is unrestricted.

Bortubet Limani is sheltered against in any kind of wind, but could be a bit small for your vessel. Try the 'Buyuk Cati Bay' instead of 'Gokcelerbuku Bay' should you decide to anchor there.

All good info, I would also like recommend my favorite spot. Go to Cati Creek. This is the small inlet, south of Seven islands, on the North shore of Datca peninsula. There is a small island at the entrance with a single bush on it. It is very good sheltered and safe in all weather and you will be staying most probably alone in the inlet. you will see some pictures in the following thread.

    http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/ferretti-yacht/97-looking-pics-ferretti-yachts.html

After posting this, I've noted that you will be visiting on a 90 meter yacht, this could be rather difficult at far end of the inlet, but you may stay at the enterence.

Coordinates for the bay is 36°47'38.74"N 28° 0'54.66"E

While cruising at Turkish waters, the procedure is not to swing, but to take a line(s) ashore. This is due to the reason that the water is mostly very deep and bottom descending fast, therefore the anchor will easily drag, if it is blowing from shoreside. However when you drop your anchor and take a line ashore, you will be pulling the anchor uphill and it is very safe. I do not have experience with a 90 meter yacht, therefore it is something to be considered, but I've seen Savarona dropping anchor and taking a line ashore. One more comment, there are severe restrictions for diving areas, you should check in advance in order to avoid difficulties at a later stage.
