Looking at several 60’+ boats with 16v2000’s in need of 4000 hr services. All appear clean but some with little in terms of service records.
Any realistic 4000 hr service costs vs top end rebuilds should things go south during service.
Coming out of smaller boat with bullet proof cat c18’s and want to be prepared
    Appreciate any help and advise

Great engines if properly maintained per manufacture spec. Have had them in a number of planning and full displacement hull arrangements world wide. I will say though, get ready to MTU you pockets cause they are not inexpensive engines to own.

Parts are stupid expensive …. $12k for a rebuild helm display… which is a bargain compared to the ER displays which include buttons to control engines and gears which my MTU guy said are worth $50k. He was trying to make me feel better about the helm displays.

4 years ago the port in frame was around $230k…. A year later the full stbd rebuild ( incl new crankshaft) was over $300k (video above). They were just around 4000 hours and well maintained according to the records that came with the boat

Not impressed with parts availability, we had to wait 4 months for a new crankshaft… made in India. At least it had been shipped first to Germany for inspection :)

One of the new water pump failed after a couple of hundred hours… over $12k.

new starters were made in China… one failed within two months

My MTU tech told me he had waited 6 months for a replacement ECU for a boat that had a lighting strike.

not impressed compared to previous experience with 3412Es and C32s
