Some time, Some how, DDC must had figured out a remote oil filter option for the 12V71 with dual oil filters. Please enlighten me with the kit, availability and other options/thoughts..
A lot of the crew boats and supply boats in Louisiana had 12/71's and the ones I worked on had the oil filters remote mounted between the engines on a stand. I don't know if this was a commercially available setup or something built in a local shop. There's a few of them in our area now serving as dive boats, I'll see if I can find any information.
Thanks to LM Viking for finding me a visual what to look for, I think I found the filter head. Also made for the Series 60. Real challenge is the oil cooler cover where the original filters mount now; From two oil cartridge mounts to two oil hose nipples as in post #3. Starting to look like a whole oil cooler core may be required.
So here is what our current 12V71 oil filters look like. Cast / molded, cover / plate assembly rite over the oil coolers.
Probably need to identify something like (but not the same) the clutch oil adapter plate with remote hose connects.
Remote oil filters will make my job less messy but would make lives so much easier on other boats (Hatts) when an interior hallway goes down between the engines.
Spilled oil on that hallway carpet between the engine rooms will never clean up. We throw down moving blankets with pads under / over.Use big/thick garbage bags to capture any dropped oil from those filters. I started taking pictures of the area before we did any work and blew off some complaints. But, if the filters were like under the front of the mains heat exchanger, all could be much cleaner. Kind of tics me off nobody has wondered about this in 65 years...
Yeah I know. Having to remove the interior wall panel just to get to the oil filters on the Hatteras' was always a pain in the rear. But is what it is..........
It does not have to be. That's what I'm trying to improve on. If I can develop a kit, life could be much better for many.
