Terrible accident with lives lost. I have so many questions.

This is an old Mexican sailing ship which was making it's way north and stopped into NYC. Something happened and it collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, taking off the tops of the masts and unfortunately killing several people.

Theres a tug making steam within 50' off the starboard side, same speed at the ship. It looks like this ship had been in distress for a few minutes as it didn't just slam it into reverse and be making that speed right there.
I think there might have been a mechanical problem, stuck in reverse perhaps? The East River has incredible currents but the ship is moving faster. You can see actual wake off the port side bow.

If the ship was dead in the water, it would have turned broadside to the current, it wouldn't be traveling perfectly straight without it being in reverse.
My biggest question is why the tug is just moving at the same speed right off the starboard side without getting a line over.

I just watched this and another video for the first time and haven't seen/heard any reports. Another video from the waterfront shows the poor guys up in the rigging getting tossed around like rag dolls and then being thrown.

It was clear that it wasn’t a power loss like local officials claimed as you could see the prop wash along side the hull. Clearly stuck in reverse.

not that old as it was build in the 80s

excellent video game it’s a lot of details:
