Yet another classic yacht. The m/y Bystander is a 138 foot-long classic escort vessel. It can tag along as she has a cruising speed of just of 13 knots and this provides her with a fairly large range. The Bystander is a small vessel and only has a weight of just over 450 tons. This vessel was launched in mid 2006 but we have not really heard that much about her since then. Anyone else know of this vessel ?http://www.ouestbateaux.com/scripts/consult/actu/DetailActu.asp?IdCla=7935&IdArt=307676&IdThe=51
Hello everyone, I'm new and this one caught my eye. When you say yet another classic yacht what do you mean? Has there been a trend in classic designs lately? Where can I see more classicly influenced yachts? Richard
Hi Richard and welcome to the YachtForums! There has always been classic designs built, so I wouldn´t call it a trend. Most are contemporary classics, from Burger and Moonen to name a couple of yards. Burger also have this vintage style boat under construction, click on "under construction" and Sycara; http://www.burgerboat.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=11&Itemid=3 What has been a trend perhaps, is to restore and convert older vessels to superyacht standard and a new life.
This is what is the trend that Lars rightly pointed out. Since being an avid yacht enthusiast, i have noticed there has been an urge by some potential yacht onwers to bring back the classical era into a modern way which still holds to the current regulations and standards. To do this most 'owners' look for older vessels and do major refits with them.. keeping the classic contempory look. However, they have been exceptions that have been scratch built to mimic the classicness of the past era. One that comes to mind is the Nero. http://www.nigelburgess.com/charter/nero/ and you can see how much she will charter for!
Thank you for welcoming me and for answering my questions. I have only just gotten interested in yachts but I have been a big ocean liner buff for years. It fascinates me to see what new things can be done with the same type of hull used 80+ years ago. Are there any other "classic-modern" yachts out there that I can check out? So far the modern built ones I have seen are the Bystander, Nero and Sycara. I have also seen one built by Azzura called their "Classic 100" its an interesting yacht but I am now on the lookout to see all that I can of this type. Thanks again everyone. Richard
There are quite a few new yachts built to resemble old, especially sailing yachts. Two of the larger are Athena and Eos. You can use the search tool on this Forum or Google to find out more. Here is a review on Athena; http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/royal-huisman-yacht/3738-review-royal-huismans-athena.html
Also do not forget the latest launch by the Royal Huisman yard, the s/y Meteor which is a copy of the s/y Borkumriff IV .Here is a link to her website. http://www.schoonermeteor.com/ http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/royal-huisman-yacht/6854-royal-huisman-s-y-meteor.html#post43134 and the builders website: http://www.**************** And welcome to YF RichardLillard1
In that case we can list the rest for him: S.Y. Windrose by Holland Jachtbouw S.Y. Ranger by Danish Yacht S.Y. Christoffel's Lighthouse S.Y. Awesome Athos by Holland Jachtbouw (in build) S.Y. Adéle by Vitters Shipyard
Maybe there should be a thread devoted to the classic yachts? Just a thought, thanks again for all the help. Richard
Here is a pic of the classic escort vessel Bystander: http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=415252
As mentioned in the beginning of this thread, Bystander is built to escort the sailing yacht on the picture, the famous J-class Velsheda.
Got it thanks, I didn't know that the "new" Bystander was still performing escort duties to Velsheda and was built as a replacement for that duty.
