I did not use the SmartCrap (CANbus) data lead and gauges on my 2003, 2.5L, 135HP OptiMax install. Still available but replacing/repairing the CANbus gauges was just going to cost way to much. Maybe later. So I'm pushing a digital engine with an analog dash. Pulled out some old FloScan equipment from the depths of my old shop and have it installed also. Tach, GPH, MPG, total use and more are available. Just need to dial it all in. So, I'm looking for the fuel consumption/load data on this 20 year old outboard. Anybody have anything in their archives?
No but a Mercury analog smartcraft tach with the little LCD screen at the bottom will give you GPH and the information you're seeking.
I found it, It is my poor communication and typing skills. Sorry all, I'll try better next thread. I did not expand enough that the gauges were not working and not installed. Should of included a picture of them with missing lens and sun-burnt LCD screen on the bottom and not working, requiring replacing/repairing them.
Gaugesavers will fix them for around $100. But they will show you GPH, record fuel used, as well as a lot of other parameters. They'll show you mpg IF you have the transducer installed or hooked to a gps......you can find them used pretty reasonably.
Gaugesavers is rite up the road. Around $150 to 175 each. Found a kid down your way that will fix both for $200. Still my poor communication skills. Should of included copies of the estimates. Unless, somebody else wants to pay for them?? Humm, maybe should of started a Go-Fund-Me site. Oh wait, I already did for our Bertram years ago. Big zip collected. Skippy J, I know all this stuff. I don't have the funds to make it fancy rite now. I have piles of Flowscan stuff in my shop collecting dust that is free. Just need to fine tune them. Hence post #1 that I keep quoting.
Too bad you don't have at least one working unit so you can temporarily plug it in to get the data you need. Are there adapters that can allow an OBDII reader to get info? I've often thought about this when having the Cat guys connecting their laptops to the engines on the boats I ran.
Replacing the gauges would be cheaper than the Merc SmartCrap adaptor. I'm not only in the dawg house, I'm in the dawg house basement. Da wife is still pissed at me. Been a year and she has not been able to use the boat yet and the checking account is thin. If I could only sell the fine 125HP that came off. Ads coming soon to YF.
Pretty interesting thread on Merc Canbus, HERE. It has pinouts and function, but they didn't get it done. They were trying to read the Canbus with NMEA 2000 and it didn't work without a gateway. I wonder if wiring to an OBDII could pull some info.
Yep, that 10 year old thread does hit that dead end. J buss I/O to N2K requires the propitiatory gateway and the propitiatory software to GUI it. I have a NSS12 ready for SmartCrap. Just no gateway or dash to install it.
Yeah, you can get vesselview mobile I think it's called, and display everything on your MFD or even your phone or tablet.
Vesselview Mobile Is a BlueTooth device that plugs into the harness like another gauge. Amazon has it for $250. Download an ap to your phone or pad and examine lots of engine data including fuel GPH. This is not a diagnostic reader. I considered this also but dropped the idea. For others, It could be a nice $250 toy. On my outboard; it will plug rite into the 10 pin J plug under the cowling. There is a grey wire jumper that must be set for the tachometer signal. Either out on the analog cable or the CANbus cable. Never both. Currently using the original styled analog cable for my tach on the dash. In an open 17' center console bouncing around at 25kts, I don't need a phone or pad bouncing around. I don't own a pad. For less than $250, I can fix my gauges I have now (post #7). Thank you again for your thoughts brother.
I was hoping somebody had the old fashioned data or remembered some paper rag boat test, for the RPM/HP/GPH curve on this lil engine. I'll just have to learn how to read and get used to another crude fuel tank analog gauge. Maybe Santa Claus will fix my gauges this year.... I think my Santa is broke also.. Retirement sux. I may need a job. Wonder if Wall Mart needs another old man somewhere? Where was that Go-Fund-Me account again???
