I just got my first Sportsfisher, 65 Viking, and want to plan a trip from grand isle down to Cozumel or around there.

Any recommendations or things I need to prepare for?

    any tips would be appreciated

Hum a few bars about your background and experience. Are you at the "never had a boat before" stage, or at the other end of the spectrum and "just want a few hints about this particular routing"? Or somewhere in between?

I’ve owned boats my entire life but the biggest is. 40’ cat. With that being said, I will have a full time captain. I was asking about skinny waters to watch out or trips you need to consider with your family. Any stuff I need to bring that one night now think about. Like, how do we fish while down there?

I would hope your captain has the ability to provide most of these answers

I've never heard anything good about the fishing there, know they catch a lot of barracuda. There's some good fishing a couple of days south of there around Costa Rica but personally I don't think it's any better than it is around the rigs off Louisiana and South Alabama.

I don’t know much about fishing but new to you boat, new captain and you re going to cross the GOM to mehico in a 65 footer? Start small… find shorter trips to shake down the boat or at least trips with more facilities and help along the way.

The trip will be in December, we will be chartering and tournament fishing until then.

I guess in a modern 65’ Viking, I assumed a well planned 500’ trip was not a big deal.

You are correct. The devil is in the detail. The best way to prepare fully is to engage a Captain who is familiar with the area and vessel type.
