looking at Silverton 410 need advice on the engines

    good morning,
    I am looking to purchase a 410 sports bridge and there seem to be quite a few with 8.1's and I am not sure which way to go gas or diesel, can anyone that has a 42+ foot boat tell me are the 8.1 gas engines underpowered, should I spend the extra for the cummings

    I wouldn’t get a gasser over 38/40’ unless you plan to use it as a dock queen or mostly at hull speed. That said silverton are lightly built so performance should be ok.

    how many hours do you plan on putting on it every year? Less than 50 to 60 gas is ok. Above that you ll be better off with diesel.

    also, diesel is much safer and diesel gens are much more reliable as well

    The 8.1 GM large block replaced the 8.2 a few years back and is the last of the GM large blocks.
    It is able to make a lil more HP (consume more fuel) than the 8.2 but I never felt it was a better engine.
    Merc and VP use the heck out of them for gas applications, mostly because it is the only large block available, IMO; NOT because it is a great block.

    OTOH; Talk about a great block that also happens to be diesel, Yep, the Cummins 6.

    If you have to have a Silverton and you have a diesel option, it is a no brainer, go with the diesels...
    If your looking at anything over 40 foot and available with serviceable diesels, go here always over gas.

    For ship & giggles, have you talked with your insurance agent about this subject? o_O

    thank you all for the input, looks like I am off to VA to look at the 2001 410 diesel. I live in the Hudson valley NY and the gasser is in CT (much closer) but I have a feeling I will be happier with Diesel

    More money up front but also will get more out of diesel on resale. You will also find a much larger buyer pool for diesel vs gas when comes time to sell. If you need more convincing just search Youtube for videos of gas boats exploding at the fuel dock when refueling.

    Diesel is often the best choice, Cummins is very good. Their SmartView system can be a pain, do a little research on the Hull Truth and see what I mean.

    I had a Silverton with Crusader 8.1s. No problems. Not real fast; but neither was the captain!

    Had a boat Captain buddy who in his 40's moved to Costa Rica & married a native less then half his age. The Florida girls he had dated referred to him as, "Fast Eddie," which one of them once told me, the name was not related to his nautical profession. :D

    I tried to buy a Silverton 41 with twin 8.1. On the way to the haulout it wouldn't get on plane. We got a metric ****-ton of gunk off the hull and props. It would barely get on plane going back to the dock. With only tw0 people, and min equipment and fuel. I passed. Lucky the only cost to me was the quick-haul and pressure wash.
