The 151’ Delta Chanson and its tender caught fire this evening at Bakers Bay Marina in the Abacos. The tender burnt and sank. Chanson may still be floating but ths last I heard it was listing. The crew are apparently safe but someone fighting the fire was seriously injured in a fall and evacuated to Nassau. Or so I heard.
I've been told the first responder broke his neck, and was airlifted to Nassau. FYI- Chanson is a 124' Delta. Originally named Casuarina.
Yes apparently. I read he had broken his back in hurricane Dorian. I hope he recovers from this and his luck gets better going forward.
Very sad. I hate these batteries, we have an eFoil on board to which I added a WiFi temp sensor which should alert me if the battery gets too hot. Not ideal. a few months ago I can across a report about a fire on the bridge of a tanker which was caused by a walkie talkie catching fire while charging.
Sad and sorry to hear it. (With a broken neck the other option could be permanent paralysis, not sure if that is any better than dying but either is bad. R.I.P.)
Apparently now they are charging the driver of the vehicle he fell off of with manslaughter. If that happens I would assume it could jeopardize the entire volunteer fire fighting operation. I mean who would want to drive the truck after that. What a mess.
If it was battery run away, which I have no doubt about, shame. RIP dear volunteer fire fighter, so sad. Way to go Pascal, you always do your best to run a tight ship. Bravo.
Ideally they should be in a firebox. Which is obviously easier said than done depending on the size of the boat. A yacht engineer suggested charging them in a large SS cooking pot with a lid on it as a cheap alternative. That way if a battery ignited you could possibly throw the pot overboard.
